Mary, The Mother of Jesus, part 2

Adapted from She, delighting in the women of the Bible, volume 3, pp 29-30

Today’s Scripture: Luke 1:26-38, Matthew 1:21, and Psalm 40:8

I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law is within my heart.”

Psalm 40:8

I love the details of Matthew 1:21, where the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream after he had decided to break off the engagement and told him not to be afraid to marry her, explaining that the child she was carrying was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

To borrow a quote from the She study journal, p31, Mary carried the Savior of the world into this world for a specific purpose.” He would save His people from their sins.

An angel also visited and encouraged Mary, telling her she was highly favored and blessed among women; he assured her that the Lord was pleased with her. The angel’s words were not only about her, though; he also told her about the child, saying: “He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David.” She learned that He would reign over the house of Jacob forever, and that his kingdom would never end. Wow! Talk about a good and encouraging ‘ultrasound’ report! (Luke 1:32-33)

Mary’s response was one of willingness, saying: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” (Luke 1:38) In other words, “Thy will be done.” Whatever God had said or asked of her, she believed the angel’s message and surrendered to the Father’s will.

REFLECTION AND APPLICATION

What did it mean when Mary said: “…be it unto me according to thy word…”? Is this our attitude/answer to Him in life?

The Difference Faith Makes

Scripture Reading: Luke 22:39-23:56; SOAP / Luke 23:41-43

41 And we rightly so, for we are getting what we deserve for what we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingdom.” 43 And Jesus said to him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Luke 23:41-43 NET

Oh how I hope you read the full passage for today. I don’t want you to miss what a heart wrenching but beautiful scene Luke paints with his words about the journey to the cross, the agony of Christ on the cross, and the love of Christ from the cross. Surely, no greater love has ever been shown than that of God, the Father and the Son! Nor has there been a truer confession than the criminal made when he announced that he is worthy of the death he is facing for the wrong he has done. Sweeter still, is the acknowledgement of the ‘righteousness’ of Jesus, in that, “He has done nothing wrong,” Likewise, perhaps, no greater encouragement for us than Jesus’s words to the criminal, when even in His anguish, yes – even then, Jesus acknowledges the criminal’s faith and promises the man eternal life with Him that very day.

Response to God’s Word
Application

This Scripture is a reminder to believers and unbelievers alike of how they should acknowledge their sin, acknowledge Jesus’ rightness and authority, and either pray for salvation or thank Him and trust Him for the salvation that is already yours by faith in Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Father thank You for loving the world so much, me included, that You gave your one and only ‘begotten sin” to save us from our sins. Jesus, thank You for bearing the punishment I deserved – You could have called 10 thousand angels for help! – You could have come down from the cross by Your power and might, ! But instead, You – who has done nothing wrong – hung there in my place! – My Jesus, I love You – and I know Thou art mine.”

Read Matthew 2:13-23

If we were to “soap” only one of these verses it most likely would be verse 16, where we read of Herod’s anger at being duped by the wise men. If we were to ‘soap’ the passage – we most likely would list the subsequent murder of all the little boys and note how the angel’s message and Joseph’s obedience were used to spare the life of Jesus. We might even note the similarities of this passage to that of a similar edict in Exodus from which Moses was spared, Exodus 1:15-22.

Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance.

Matthew 2:16

However, as I read through this passage what caught my attention this time were several sets of repeated phrases; so I went back to highlight the unfolding story of these early days/years following Jesus’ birth. Notice with me there are two times where we read that “an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream”, and once where he was “warned in a dream”, (13, 19, and 22). It is apparent in each instance that the angel brought instructions/warnings in order to protect but also to position them where God wanted them to be. This was another of the highlighted similarities. In verses 14 and 23 we read how the angel’s appearance and Joseph’s obedience fulfilled the prophecies that had been spoken. These same verses, 14 and 23, reveal Joseph’s obedient response to the angel’s instructions – which is the third set of highlighted similarities.

I believe we can learn much from these observations. We may not have an angel of the Lord appear to us in a dream but we do know that God has placed His Spirit in us to teach us and to remind us of all that He has said. We would be wise to be alert to His teaching and reminders as well as to live yielded and obedient as Joseph did. Another application comes in the form of comfort and peace knowing that God makes a habit of protecting and positioning His children according to His perfect plan – knowledge that leads us to a deeper trust.

But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
