Mighty Warrior

13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Ephesians 6:13-18

Because we are fighting a spiritual battle against the rulers and powers of darkness and spiritual forces of evil, Paul says for the second time, we must take up the full armor of God! Paul is not simply being redundant here – he is emphasizing the need for the armor. The battle may not be physical, but taking up the full armor of God requires deliberate action on our part. Standing firm…fastening on the belt of truth…putting on the breastplate of righteousness…fitting our feet with the Gospel of peace…taking up the shield of faith…extinguishing the flaming arrows of the evil one…taking the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit…praying…being alert…persevering…and petitioning God for specific needs are not passive actions. We cannot sit by doing nothing while the battles wage around us. If we want to be ready for any assault the enemy brings our way, then we must be engaged mentally, spiritually, and yes – even physically, so that we can stand firm

So, if it is a spiritual battle, why and how can we prepare physically? The first and crucial preparation is spending time with God in His Word. You see, God has equipped us with both the Spirit and His Word; through their power, we are strengthened for victory in every battle. That is why Peter wrote that we have everything we need to live a godly life.1 But friends, we must be invested in His Word, reading it, gaining wisdom for the battles, using it as a weapon to stand firm. We must hide it in our hearts, have it ready on our phones, or in our car to pull out and use as a sword against the enemy’s assaults. We must stay actively engaged in prayer and be devoted to it, as Paul wrote to the Colossians.2 This doesn’t mean we walk around with our eyes shut and our heads down, but that we pray with His promises and Word in mind, for nothing can stop the enemy quicker than the Word of God. We need to stay alert to the Spirit’s prompting3

 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

Father, help us to stay alert, never forgetting that our enemy, the devil, prowls around, like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Help us to be on guard – to know Your truth and walk in Your ways. The breastplate of righteousness not only offers great protection, but it also identifies believers in the battle. So help us to put it on and wear it well. Help us to truly understand the message of the Gospel, and to be prepared to talk about its good news wherever we go. Help us take up the shield of faith, that we might be protected from the weapons of the enemy, even his fiery darts. May we be faithful to wear the helmet of salvation, not only for protection but for comfort and peace, since the mind is often the easiest and/or primary target. Your Word, o Lord, is a powerful weapon against the enemy (Matt 4:1-11)- train us well that we might use it well. – Thank You for not leaving us defenseless and for the privilege of wearing Your armor. – Amen and Amen!

God’s Full Armor

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

Oh, how I love this passage! It is one of my top 10 favorite passages. I love when God gives us the “what to (be strengthened in the Lord), how to (by putting on the full armor of God), and the reason to (so that you will be able to stand against the schemes of the devil)” do what is needful to live as He has called us to live. Perhaps the best part is knowing that we are not expected, nor should we try, to rely on our own strength to live as He has called us to live. Instead, we are trained and encouraged to depend on God’s power. Only then will we be able to overcome the battles and faithfully live out the real-world scenarios and warnings that Paul has given throughout his letter. His instructions have called us to love, obedience, and faithful living, to forgiving others, putting others first, and everything that comes with putting off the old nature and putting on the new. Because our new nature is from Christ (2 Cor 5:17), we are blessed to be able to put on God’s full armor, which Paul will elaborate on in the next section of this passage.

I love when God gives us the “what to (be strengthened in the Lord), how to (by putting on the full armor of God), and the reason to (so that you will be able to stand against the schemes of the devil)” do what is needful to live as He has called us to live.

Me from the Inside Out🦋

Friends, to truly resist the devil as James warns us1, we must daily and deliberately put on and use every weapon God has made available to us. The devil, as Paul points out, is strategically scheming and purposefully coordinating plans to destroy the people of God and/or their obedience and good works. However, we have nothing to fear, for we can rest in and celebrate the truth that the enemy is no match for the power God has given us to “stand against2” the devil’s schemes!

Ephesians 6:12 clearly indicates that the conflict with Satan is spiritual, and therefore no tangible weapons can be effectively employed against him and his minions. We are not given a list of specific tactics Satan will use. However, the passage is quite clear that when we follow all the instructions faithfully, we will be able to stand, and we will have victory regardless of Satan’s strategy.

I do not like being in the dark about things, which is why verse 12 is one of my favorites in this passage. While I may not know precisely how Satan will attack, I like that Paul tells us exactly who, what, and where the battle comes from. God has trained me, and continues to train me, that I need to stop seeing people as my enemy. For, as Paul so beautifully describes, this is not a physical battle but a spiritual one. The devil may use people3 or things as part of his attack, but our true enemy, according to God’s Word, is the devil/sin itself, and the only way to overcome him is to heed Paul’s ‘how to’ instructions daily. The armor is a great gift and accessory of our faith, and if we hope to stand firm against the schemes of the devil, we must never lay it aside or forget its incredible power.

A Pure Life

Scripture: Psalm 119:9-16 / SOAP: verse 11

In my heart I store up your words,
so I might not sin against you.

Psalm 119:11

Oh my goodness, I love-love-love this passage. I can’t remember when I first ran across it, but I believe it was one of the first set of verses I put to memory back in the early nineties. I’ve probably said it here before, but I love passages of Scripture with straightforward, step-by-step instructions like this one.

The Psalmist asks, “How can a young person maintain a pure life?” From the same pen flows the simple but complex answer(s). Obviously, the SOAP verse is the crux of the answer: to “hide or store up God’s Word in our heart.” As we saw in the previous post, this is undoubtedly a chief means of combating the enemy in battle. Jesus is a testimony of this throughout His ministry, but very clearly in Matthew 4:1-11. However, by way of application to our everyday life we must also note all the other ways the Psalmist outlines living a pure life.

  • Living by God’s Word
  • Knowing God’s Word
  • Staying faithful to God’s Word
  • Focusing on God’s Behavior
  • Seeking God
  • Praying to God for Help
  • Praising God
  • Being taught by God
  • Delight in God’s way
  • Remember God’s instructions
  • Meditating on God’s precepts*

Is Living A Pure and Holy Life Possible?

Absolutely! Everything God has called us to is possible through Him, who called us by His own glory and goodness. However, it takes intentionality and consistency in choosing God’s way over yours. Applying the criteria the Psalmist lists takes a lifetime of dying to self and daily following Christ’s steps, which is basically what Christ told the crowd in the ninth chapter of Luke when He said: “If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.” When this is how we choose to live, when we intentionally and consistently choose God’s way over the world’s, we will find ourselves living the pure and holy life the Psalmist sought after and that God has called us to live.

God has already made us holy in Christ. He has already set us apart and saved us. Now he calls us to make choices that reflect who we already are.

Prayer of Response to God’s Word

Father, You have called us to be holy as You are holy. This can seem an overwhelming demand upon our life until we also remember that Your servant Peter said that You have empowered us to be all that You have called us to be. We are able to be set apart and holy because through Christ You have made us new creations – the old has gone and the new is here. Help us to live up to what You created us to be. Help us to live lives that are set apart from the world, lives that reflect You and not the world. Help us to die to self and live for You, to follow in the ways of Christ our Lord and Savior. Help us to remember that we are Yours and have been set apart for You. Help us to be hungry for your Word, to hide it in our heart so that we might not sin against You. Help us to stay faithful to Your Word that it might dictate our behavior. In this You will be glorified as we live as Your representatives in Christ – in Whose name I pray – Amen and amen!

Faith Is The Victory

Dressed and Ready – Well, Almost

Ok, so you have your belt of truth in place which is securing your breastplate of righteousness and your feet are readily fitted with the Gospel of peace – but don’t forget your shield of faith. According to gotquestions.org, FAITH is a protective barrier that helps us stay grounded in the TRUTH. It is the VICTORY we know that overcomes the world! (1Jn 5:4 and Hebrews 11:1) In reference to “overcoming the world”, we would do well to remember that Jesus Himself referred to satan, our enemy, the evil one, as the “ruler of this world”. When talking about His own impending death, Jesus announced: “The time for judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out.” John 12:31.

Bigger and Better than We Can Imagine

Check out this word picture of our “Shield of Faith”. It makes me tired just thinking about how I will lift it and hold it in place but then I remember that, if I followed Paul’s instructions from the beginning – my strength and power come from the Lord! – Ephesians 6:10

The Roman shield of the time was called a scutum (/ˈsko͞odəm/). This type of shield was as large as a door and would cover the warrior entirely. Such a shield was not just defensive but could also be used to push opponents. When fighting as a group, a phalanx of soldiers could position their shields so as to form an enclosure around themselves, called a testudo (“tortoise”). This was especially helpful to protect against arrows launched from the walls of cities they were attacking. Shields, often made of wood and then covered in hide, when wet, could extinguish flaming arrows.

If that word picture isn’t enough, Scripture’s is even better, our faith is one of the greatest gifts we have, abiding right along side hope and love – 1 Cor 13:13; Paul goes on to write that faith is the way we receive grace, Eph 2:8-9 and that it is the means of our justification, Rom 5:1 and Col 3:24.

So take heart, in those moments when you feel like you are the enemy’s target practice, like he just launches one flaming arrow after another, God’s armor includes a sure and powerful shield that is ours through faith in Jesus Christ.

Prayer of Response to God’s Word

Father, some days or even seasons of life it can seem like the enemy hurls one flaming arrow after another but we have this hope through faith in Christ – that no weapon formed against us can stand. We have access to Your Armor that is surely able to defeat the enemy! Help us to heed Paul’s opening word of instruction concerning the armor – to be strengthen in You and in Your power, for I am convinced that we cannot wear this armor with Your Power and strength. Help us to suit up in the full armor, including the shield of FAITH that can extinguish all the flaming arrows of evil one. Help us to stay alert, remembering that our enemy prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour and he uses all kinds of tactic, from fruit of a tree in the garden to the challenge to

This verse is not meant to stand alone, so let’s look again at the ones that come before it. As you read, notice all of the instructions we are given for living out our faith well –

Finally, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power. 11 Clothe yourselves with (the full armor of God), so that you will be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.13 For this reason, (take up the full armor of God) so that you may be able to stand your ground on the evil day, (and having done everything, to stand.) 14 Stand firm therefore, by fastening the belt of truth around your waist, by putting on the breastplate of righteousness, by fitting your feet with the preparation that comes from the good news of peace –

The Responsibility is Ours

As believers we have been saved by grace through faith, it is a free and forever gift of God. That being said we are given responsibilities as believers that we must strive for the rest of our Christian life. James said, “Faith without works is dead.” He encourages the believer to not just read or hear the Word but to live it out. Living out our faith doesn’t have to be a mystery, that is the purpose of His Word and the examples set before us in Christ and the other disciples and men and women of faith throughout Scripture

So far in our study we have been given the responsibility of “putting on” the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness. In today’s soap verse we have been given the task of “fitting our feet with the preparation that comes from the good news of peace.” This is the third piece of armor we are called to wear in preparation for battle. We will spend the week learning more about this peace, what it is, and how to apply/wear it well. Remember we are to suit up in the “full armor” so that we can stand against the schemes of the devil (11,13), and not just stand but we are to stand firm (14).

Shoes

For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.

Ephesians 6:15

I love the way the New Living Translation and others translate verse 15 using the word “shoes”. I loved going barefoot as a child and still to this day I would rather have my shoes off than on, but I have learned that there are times where it is very helpful to wear my shoes. It is also helpful to wear the right shoes. For instance, I would not wear my snow boots on a sandy beach nor my beach shoes on a snow walk. I love my comfy slip on shoes but I know not to wear them on a three-mile walk. The same is true of the soldier who has his belt and and breastplate in place, he knows he has to have have his feet in the right shoes in order to use the other pieces of his armor well. Just like the shoes of the soldier make him ready for battle the “Gospel of peace” makes the believer ready for spiritual battle. We will look more intently at what this all means in the days to come – but for today suit up with the belt of TRUTH and the breastplate of righteousness – and don’t forget to fit your feet with the peace that comes from the Gospel, the Good News about Christ.

The gospel is, broadly speaking, the whole of Scripture; more narrowly, the gospel is the good news concerning Christ and the way of salvation.

Set Apart In the Truth

I had the best time studying today’s passage but the day got in the way and then the evening responsibilities and here I am with so much to say but falling asleep trying to say it. My guess is I will eventually get it shared but for now I’m going to share a portion of today’s LGG Devotional and prayer with the hope that you will find encouragement and see the correlation between Jesus’ prayer in John 17 and Paul’s instructions about putting on the “belt of truth”. –

The Foundational Piece of Armor

The belt of truth is the foundational piece of the armor of God. It is designed to keep all the other pieces of armor in their place. This verse reminds us of the power of God’s Word and the importance of knowing it in our lives. When we make a habit of reading and studying the BIble, we are intentionally saturating our mind and heart with the truth. This truth serves as our spiritual armor, equipping us to stand firm in our faith and resist the attacks of the enemy.

God’s Word is the Truth

Because God’s Word is truth, it not only sets us apart from the world but sets us free, too. We acknowledge our emotions and the value they play in our lives, but we also know their place. Our emotions do not dictate what is true in our lives. Only God’s Word has that honor.

  • Prayer: May we never forget the power of Your Word. May Your truth be the foundation of my life. Set us apart for Your glory. Help us to remember to clothe ourselves with the belt of truth each morning as we strive to clothe our minds and hearts with your Words and Your truth – Amen!

Truth and Righteousness

First Things First

Before we jump into the first two pieces of armor let’s not miss the reason and instruction that come with the armor.

The Reason is found in verses 10-12, namely to stand against the “schemes of the devil”, our real and present enemy, He is evil (the ruler of darkness, part of the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens…) he is dangerous and deadly to those caught unaware and unarmed. However, when we follow the instructions Paul gives, specifically “putting on the full armor of God, we will be able to withstand the devil’s plots and schemes and all manners of evil meant to steal, kill, and destroy the children of God.

Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.

Not a Three-Piece-Suit

I especially appreciate the NLT version of this verse, as it makes clear that our armor is not to be treated like a three-piece-suit where you can wear the pants and jacket and forego the vest or the pants and vest and forego the jacket. No, Paul stresses that it is to be, as the NLT translates, every piece, that is if you want to still be standing when the battle is over – and not just standing – but standing firm – unwavering! We are to be covered from head-to-toe, specifically and intentionally covered and ready for warfare.

It takes the whole “suit of armor” to successfully stand against the enemy – me, from the inside-out

The Belt and BreastPlate / truth and Righteousness
  1. The Belt of Truth is listed first, which I love because ‘truth’ is not only one of the names applied to Jesus in John 14:6, but it is also the name applied to the Word of God in John 17:17. It seems to be that God’s Truth is the very foundation of our salvation since faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word [truth] of God as Paul discloses in Romans 10:17.
    • Here’s something interesting though. This piece of the armor isn’t simply about the truth, but rather how the the truth helps and protects us – which is seen most clearly when we understand why Paul used the metaphor of the “belt”. I read it somewhere, years ago but found it again today on the Billy Graham website . The writer explainsthat – “In ancient times, a warrior’s belt was essential for survival. It not only held his weapons; it cinched his tunic at the waist, allowing him to move about freely.” The writer also included this analogy, “Just as a belt gave the warrior freedom of movement and a way to defend himself, the belt of truth provides spiritual freedom and protection for those who belong to Jesus Christ.”
    • Putting it on: Simply start with Scripture. Read it, listen to it, study it on your own or with a group, sit under the teaching of it, keep it open on your app or written on cards and post-it-notes where you will see it often. The idea is to be saturated with it and just as a belt holds up pieces of clothing it is meant to have an affect on the rest of the armor.
  2. The second piece of armor that Paul mentions is the “breastplate of righteousness” which we study in-depth in our second week.

Prepare Yourself

10 Finally, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power. 11 Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

Ephesians 6:10-11

Paul has been giving instructions to the Church of Ephesus on obedience, giving specific instructions to children, parents, slaves, and masters. As he wraps up the teaching on obedience, he tells them how to remain faithful and obedient to God, or to use Paul’s words, “how to stand firm.” He starts with the reminder that their strength and power must come from the Lord and there is one that plots against them. However, it’s the next phrase that captured my attention:“Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand [against the schemes of the devil].” If I were teaching this in the classroom, I would undoubtedly be writing this on a whiteboard, underlining and circling and highlighting every word of this sentence. Why? Because it is crucial to the rest of the passage and to living obedient lives and surviving the battle that Eve, and every person on the face of the earth has faced since the garden.

Please note the personal responsibility Paul places on every believer. We are to “clothe ourselves”, in other words to “put on” our own protection. We cannot dress others in the armor nor can they ‘clothe’ us. Neither are we to pick and choose which pieces we want to wear. No, if we wish to win the battle(s), we are to put all of the armor on; and it is clear that we are to not only put each piece on but we are to know what the pieces are and how they protect us. Don’t miss the added key to all of the armor is prayer and alertness. While he doesn’t say to put these on he gives clear instruction to “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”

Paul testifies, and all of Scripture supports, that the devil schemes against the children of God; and that without being properly (ie fully) clothed with God’s “armor” we will not be able to stand. Instead, we will, like Eve, succumb to his tricks and deceitfulness. Make no mistake, as children of God, the devil is our number one enemy and we must learn to live fully armed and ready.

There is much to learn in the weeks ahead. Many, if not all of us, have already heard or studied this section of our soldier manual (the Bible), and yet good soldiers never stop training. They continually prepare for battle, they make sure their equipment is in order, and that they are well versed in using it. They know what is expected of them, they have drills, and training sessions to assure that they are ready. We must do no less and we must start with the wisdom packed into these two little verses.
