Vision Check

By faith, when Moses was born, his parents hid him[a] for three months, because they saw the child was beautiful and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24 By faith, when he grew up, Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be ill-treated with the people of God than to enjoy sin’s fleeting pleasure. 26 He regarded abuse suffered for Christ[b] to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for his eyes were fixed on[c] the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt without fearing the king’s anger, for he persevered as though he could see the one who is invisible.  Hebrews 11:23-27

Father, you are Good, Amid the distractions of the morning, the frustrations and hurts and concerns of this morning and the past week – in the middle of it all I am reminded that You are God and You are good. You are TRUSTWORTHY for You are FAITHFUL and TRUE! Help me, like Moses, to keep my eyes focused on You, looking forward to Your promise of life everlasting through the Messiah, Jesus Christ! Help my vision not be blurred by the pleasures and privileges of this life or blinded by the sufferings. Instead, help me to look to You above and before everything and everyone – and in this, may You find pleasure and be glorified!

Some trust in chariots some in horses but I will trust in the name of the name of the Lord, my God. Psalm 20:7

A Perfected System

Old Rules about Worship

Now the first covenant,Β in fact, had regulations for worship and its earthly sanctuary.Β 2Β For a tent was prepared, the outer one,Β which containedΒ the lampstand, the table, and the presentation of the loaves; this is called the Holy Place.Β 3Β And after the second curtain there was a tent called the holy of holies.Β 4Β It contained the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered entirely with gold. In this arkΒ were the golden urn containing the manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.Β 5Β And above the arkΒ were the cherubimΒ of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Now is not the time to speak of these things in detail.Β 6Β So with these things prepared like this, the priests enter continually into the outer tentΒ as they perform their duties.Β 7Β But only the high priest enters once a year into the inner tent,Β and not without blood that he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance.Β 8Β The Holy Spirit is making clear that the way into the Holy Place had not yet appeared as long as the old tabernacleΒ was standing.Β 9Β This was a symbol for the time then present, when gifts and sacrifices were offered that could not perfect the conscience of the worshiper.Β 10Β They served only for matters of food and drinkΒ and various ritual washings; they are external regulations imposed until the new order came.
Hebrews 9:1-10

Christ’s Service in the Heavenly Sanctuary

Β But now Christ has comeΒ as the high priest of the good things to come. He passed through the greater and more perfect tent not made with hands, that is, not of this creation,Β 12Β and He entered once for all into the Most Holy Place not by the blood of goats and calves but by His own blood, and so He Himself securedΒ eternal redemption.Β 13Β For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow sprinkled on those who are defiled consecrated them and provided ritual purity, 14Β how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, purify our consciences from dead works to worship the living God.

15Β And so He is the mediatorΒ of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the eternal inheritance He has promised,Β since He diedΒ to set them free from the violations committed under the first covenant.Β 16Β For where there is a will, the death of the one who made it must be proven. 17Β For a will takes effect only at death, since it carries no force while the one who made it is alive.

Hebrews 9:11-17

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Father, You are good! In Your goodness, You bought me with a high price and made a WAY where there was, or seemed to be, no way. Because of Your goodness, we no longer need the Tabernacle of long ago because You have made us Your Temple. The Tabernacle was good and beautiful in its purpose and design and it pointed Your people to the better WAY, the Messiah, yet to come. However, as they knew then and we see clearly now – the gifts and sacrifices they made could not perfect the conscience of the worshiper. So, You, in Your goodness, took away the need for the regulations, rituals, and animal sacrifices that were a part of the Tabernacle ‘system’ – by sending the promised and long-awaited Redeemer, Jesus Christ. The sinless Redeemer, Your only begotten Son, was a PERFECT Sacrifice whose death, burial, and resurrection made a WAY! He conquered sin and death and made THE ONLY WAY for us to enter into Your Presence and be the dwelling place for the Holy Spirit. So that, now through His eternal sacrifice and Your gift of His Spirit in me, I AM ABLE, with a clear conscience, to WORSHIP You in Spirit and in TRUTH, to walk in FREEDOM from sin and to live for You as His WITNESS! Yes, Father, You are good.

Jesus said to him, β€œI amΒ the way, and the truth, and the life. NoΒ one comes to the FatherΒ except through Me.” John 14:6

The Better Covenant

For the law made nothing perfect. On the other hand a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.Β 20Β And since this was not done without a sworn affirmationβ€”for the others have become priests without a sworn affirmation,Β 21Β but JesusΒ did so with a sworn affirmation by the one who said to him, β€œThe Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,Β β€˜You are a priest forever’”— 22Β accordingly Jesus has become the guaranteeΒ of a better covenant.Β 23Β And the othersΒ who became priests were numerous, because death prevented themΒ from continuing in office,24Β but he holds his priesthood permanently since he lives forever.Β 25Β So he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.Β 26Β For it is indeed fitting for us to have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Hebrews 7:19-26

Father, You are good! And what greater way to see Your goodness than through Jesus Christ, our Guarantee of a better covenant. The covenant of GRACE rather than law! I see Your goodness in Him who saves completely (perfectly) those who come to You through Him. Because He lives forever – interceding for us who have through FAITH believed. I see Your goodness in providing a better Priest — One who, Himself, is HOLY, and separate from sinners. The One who is exalted above the heavens and who offered Himself as a sacrifice on my behalf!

Yes Father, I see Your goodness – the depth of it – through JESUS CHRIST – my Lord!

A Different High Priest

Without father, without mother, without genealogy, he has neither beginning of days nor end of life but is like the Son of God, and he remains a priest for all time. Hebrews 7:3 (NET)

Father, you are good! And in your goodness, You have given me a Great High Priest. – One who is not born of human descent but sent from heaven. One with no beginning or end – in the order of Melchizedek. One without Sin! One who not only offers a sacrifice on my behalf but who is my sacrifice. Whose Righteousness covers me. Whose peace and love fill me. And one after whom I am being transformed. There is much HOPE in Your goodness and in my Savior and High Priest – Jesus Christ! May His love and light shine brightly through me – today and every day.

The Meditation of My Heart

Father, You are good and in Your goodness You have given me much needed rest and I praise You. The enemy has been quick to target my mind with fiery darts of the past but Your Spirit has been faithful and quick to remind me to – take captive every thought to make it obedient to Jesus Christ! (2 Cor. 10:5) Help me to do this throughout today and everyday and to encourage others to do the same – so that,

The words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart may be pleasing to you, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14

A Way To Know You

Father, You are good and in Your goodness You have provided Your Word as a way for us to know You.πŸ’œ Your Word allows me to personally know Who You are, to know my sinfulness and need for a Savior; It makes a way for me to not only know The Savior but to trust in Him and to have a relationship with You, the True and Living God. To be able to grow in the wisdom and understanding of your Word is a blessing that allows me to live and love like Jesus❀️, to bring salt and light into this dark world, and to share You with others.

I do not deserve this blessing but have received it as a gift from YouπŸ’œ It is a gift born not of merit but of Your love and desire to have a relationship with me. You are good and I am greatly blessed!

Are You Ready?

Everyday I declare the Goodness of God. I look for it and see it often in my own life or in the life of someone I know. I see it in His Word or played out on the world’s stage in some miracle unexplainable by man. I know He is good. I trust in His goodness. I rehearse it daily in prayer and praise to Him, and I proclaim it often to others. However, there are days when the goodness is overshadowed by the disappointments in life or the hurtful deeds and words of another. There are, I confess, moments when I find myself tempted to doubt or at the very least question ‘it’. *I mean where is His goodness in job loss or the devastating illness of a loved one? Where is ‘it’ in financial struggles, the hurtful words of a friend, or when a spouse walks out on the marriage? Where is His goodness when the ones we trust aren’t honest with us or a trusted confident betrays us? Where is it when the something good we’ve waited for comes – and then just as quickly is taken away. Where is it when ________? You fill in the blank. I would venture to say that if we are honest we can all fill in that blank.

We may not want to admit it but, I believe, we’ve all experienced something that has made us at least wonder, even for a fleeting second, if God is really good then why did this happen? When it does, we must be careful and quick to remember – when “we do not see God’s hand we can trust His heart”*. If we do not act quickly with the truths that we know – the enemy will gain a foothold and we will find ourselves tempted with bitterness, anger, ungodly responses, and all sorts of other sin. Satan’s purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy and there’s no greater destruction he would take pleasure in than to make us doubt or turn away from our God. Peter called the devil an adversary and told the Jewish Christians of his day that if they would “resist” the devil he would flee from them. Just in case we think this warning was only for the Jewish Christians of Peter’s day, we must remember that God gave us His word and said it “is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness”. When doubts come we must be prepared to use our knowledge from God’s Word to stand firm. To be prepared we must put into practice the words Paul wrote to Timothy and train for godliness.

Physical training is good but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:8 (NLT)

To train for godliness we must first and foremost know God’s Word so that we can put our training into practice. For instance -when we know that His Word says He is our provider we must learn to trust Him to provide in our time of need. The same is true of the proclamation that He is our deliverer, when faced with trying situations we must trust that He will deliver us. Trusting God to be faithful as His Word declares may not always be easy but it is always beneficial, developing an enduring faith. When we practice trusting, despite the inevitable times when He doesn’t deliver or provide exactly as we requested or hoped, we will no doubt, in time, experience Him to be a faithful provider and deliverer and so much more. These experiences will foster a personal relationship with God. They will also develop a confidence that is built up over time through the implementation of trusting, waiting, and reciprocal faithfulness to Him. For an example of such confidence, consider David’s words to Saul when Saul challenged his ability to face the giant, Goliath.

The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine. 1 Samuel 17:37

Again, when threatened by the giant himself, David recalls the faithfulness He has seen from God and declares his full confidence to be in Him – even in this difficult and life-threatening situation. From these experiences with His God came his confident reply to Goliath’s threat:

You come against me with a dagger, spear, and sword, but I come against you in the name of Yahweh of Hosts, the God of Israel’s armies – You have defied Him. Today, the LORD will hand you over to me. Today, I’ll strike you down, cut your head off and give the corpses of the Philistine camp to the birds of the sky and the creatures of the earth. Then all the world will know that Israel has a God, and this whole assembly will know that it is not by sword or by spear that the LORD saves, for the battle is the LORD’S. He will hand you over to us. 1 Samuel 17:45-47

Ah, and there is the answer. We don’t just see His goodness when life is problem free – we see it in the realization that the battles of this life, the temptations of this fallen world we live in, or the full on attacks of our enemy, the devil – belong to the LORD. His goodness shines when we remember Who He is and what He has done on our behalf already. It is known when we know Whose we are and what it means to belong to Him. We experience it when it becomes evident that He has equipped us not just with armor and weapons for the battle but with everything we need for life and godliness. The answer lies in walking by faith and not by sight and keeping our eyes on the author and the perfecter of our faith. It is in knowing that He has promised a way of escape when we are tempted, looking for that way and taking it; and yes, it is in humbling ourselves before our God, resisting the devil – and believing he will flee. God’s Word is TRUTH and I believe His TRUTH sets us free not only from the law of sin and death but from the attacks, the fears, the battles, and the assault of the enemy. If we aren’t trained and ready with the TRUTH – when the doubts come – we will be shaken; but, if we set the LORD always before us, and know that He is at our right hand we will, like David, stand in the face of our problems or the adversary and proclaim “I come against you in the name of the LORD, my God!”

*On a personal note: Like David, I have learned that God can be trusted. I have tasted and seen His goodness in all of the difficult situations listed in the opening paragraph. So, when the days come where the disappointments, and hurts, or life’s challenges threaten to overshadow the goodness of God I practice David’s example of recalling what the LORD has done. I write it, or speak it out loud, or whisper it in a prayer, and I proclaim – Father I cannot see or understand what You’re doing or allowing, but I know You are Good and I will trust You. When doubts arise, I have learned to practice recalling His goodness and trusting His heart. I have those in my life that will come along side of me and remind me of the truth and I have often had to play that role in the lives of others. I am continually learning to walk by His Spirit, who lives in me and was given to teach me and remind me of everything Christ said (John 14:26). If you do not know God I would love to introduce Him to you, or if you are struggling to trust Him through a present battle I would be happy to pray for you – please just leave a reply that says I want to know Him – or pray for me.

The Privilege of Prayer

Father, You are good. Again, this morning, I am reminded of Your goodness through Your Word that is filled with Your invitations and encouragement to pray. You, the Most High God – Creator and Sustainer of Life, have invited me to pray. What an amazing privilege it is to be Your child, to be invited into Your presence – not just to hear from You but to converse with you – and not only at certain times but continually (Col. 4:2). The invitation comes with the promise that you will hear and answer according to Your perfect will – because You CARE (1 Peter 5:7), because You KNOW our need (Matthew 6:8), because – YOU. ARE. ABLE! (Ephesians 3:20), and because You are loving and kind, full of mercy and grace and compassion of Hope and strength and joy and peace that will guard our hearts and minds as we live in Christ Jesus! (Phil 4:6-7).

I am blessed by Your goodness and the privilege of prayer! You know the desires of my heart Father, but let this not deter me from asking, seeking, and knocking, from telling You my needs or anxious thoughts and cares. And when I ask, let me not doubt but believe – and expect – not my will but Yours to be done. For I know that You are able to do immeasurably more than I ask or even imagine. And may I never forget that this privilege is mine only through the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ and my faith in Him.

What a Friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
what a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer

O what peace we often forfeit
O what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer.
Bing Crosby

Nothing Can Separate Me

August 22, 2020

Father, You are Good and I am thankful. Thankful that I do not work on Saturday so that I am able to awake later and STAY in bed or sit at my desk – in the quiet – undisturbed – unscheduled day and hear Your voice and read Your Word and glean and write and encourage and be encouraged … where I can hide Your Word in my heart and rehearse it … where my body finds rest and my heart and mind restoration. You meet me on Saturdays with Your healing balm and I am eternally blessed.

This morning’s Scripture(s) came as I was rehearsing Your Word that has been hidden in my heart – specifically, Isaiah 59:2 that says our sin separates us from You – that they hide Your face from us so that You will not hear! Immediately, before I could finish the last word, Your Spirit reminded me of Paul’s words in Roman 8:38-39 where he says he is convinced that “NOTHING can separate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.” So, I’ve spent some time chasing down what at first – and even second – glance can seem like an antithesis. The bottom line is this – Isaiah’s words are right – sin does separate us from You God because You are holy and cannot and will not tolerate sin. However, Paul is also right – in that “Nothing can separate us from the LOVE OF GOD that is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.” While sin can/does put a “wedge” between us and You, Father, it cannot and will not separate us/me from Your Love! I know this is true because the depth of Your love propelled You to give Your only Son so that all who believe in Him will have “everlasting” life. I know this because Your Spirit lives in me and is a sign and a seal that I am Yours eternally! If we do not believe surely we will die and forever be separated from You! But, for all those who believe You have given the rights to become Your children – and this, through Christ’s atoning blood and righteousness – so that when You look on us – on me – You do not see the wretched sinner that I was but the NEW CREATION that I am in Christ Jesus, my Lord and Savior! So, the two passages are not antithesis at all but rather – one – a warning to be heeded and the other – a beautiful LIFE GIVING PROMISE to claim.

It is with great pleasure that in the middle of this morning’s lesson I noticed Your fingerprints on my morning. As I saw how lovely You had highlighted and tied together these [random] Scriptures with the Scriptures and lessons in my current study – “Know Love”. Only You God, only You could orchestrate and carry out this timing so perfectly! Is it any wonder that I love You and proclaim morning after morning that You are Good!?

THE GREATER GIFT

Father, You are good πŸ’œ You heard my simple but heartfelt prayer for uninterrupted sleep and You gave it. Even when I stirred in the early morning hours You lulled me back to sleep – and I praise You! In Your great and mysterious sovereignty – the Scripture reading this morning was from Psalm 116, which says: “Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.” Yes, in the night You gave me the restful sleep I desperately sought – but the greater gift of Your goodness, as the Psalmist goes on to describe is this –

You have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling that I may walk before You in the land of the living -Psalm 116: 8-9

And as the Psalmist – “I trusted in You when I said, many times over, I am greatly afflicted,” and so also I say with him – “What shall I return to the LORD for all His goodness to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on Your name – O LORD.”

Your praise and goodness will continually be in my heart and on my tongue. My lips will glorify Your great name forever and forever – Amen!

Me, from the inside-out
