Scripture: Our Road Map For the Journey / Luke 21 (SOAP: verses 34-36)

 “But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day close down upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will overtake all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that must happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.” Luke 21:34-36 NET

Observation and Application from the Journey

For the last five weeks, we have heard, in various ways, the reminder that Jesus is coming again. We have been warned to stay alert and to be ready. We have read words of excitement, hope, doom and gloom, warning, and victory. Today’s message is much the same.

The signs will be clear; the Kingdom of God is near! The question is, will we be so caught up in the world that we are too earthbound to grow excited about what and who is coming?

Today’s passage, specifically vs. 34-36, draws our attention once again to the warning to be alert but not just to the signs around us. Here, the disciples are warned not to become weighed down or caught up with the pleasures or worries of this life, allowing those things to blind them from the clear signs that God’s Kingdom is near.

He does not want them so consumed by the things of this world that they fail to pay attention to the signs of His coming kingdom.

Whenever and wherever in history we are found waiting for His return, Jesus makes it clear that His disciples are to: “Stay alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that must happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

With Christ, we will always have the hope of heaven, a hope that will one day be a reality for all who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ. –1

Prayer of response to the journey

Father, so much around us heightens our senses to the coming reality of Christ’s return. Help us not be so caught up with the world that we shrink back from the excitement that the Hope of Heaven brings. Help us not to tremble in fear or be weighed down with worries but to pray, as Jesus said, that we have the strength to escape all these things that must happen and to stand before Him. Put Your hedge of protection around us and fill us with Your peace that passes all understanding, guarding our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. May we wait with patience, excitement, and alertness to those around us who need to know JESUS, and may we be quick to share Him in Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen and Amen!

The Importance of Praying

Scripture: Philippians 4:4-7 / SOAP Philippians 4:6-7

6 Do not be anxious about anything. Instead, in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, tell your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Regardless of how convinced we are that living set apart from the world is the right way to live the commitment can be daunting. It takes courage to look different, sound different – to be different than the world around us. We may lack boldness and at times true conviction, or we may fear the mocking or desertion of others that often come with the choices we make that are different than the norm. This is is why prayer is essential. God invites us to bring Him all of our anxiety, all our cares, concerns, and fears (1 Peter 5:7). He tells us to ask for wisdom (James 1:5), and to call to Him for help (Ps 17:6; 120:1) and strength (1 Chron 16:11). And He says He has given us everything we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3-4). If you want to live set apart – simply tell God. Ask Him for His help, lean on Him for His strength, and watch expectantly for what happens in the days ahead. Trust Him, He is faithful and He will answer whenever we ask for anything that pleases Him – and we know when we live set apart from the world it pleases Him.

And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. 15 And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.

Today’s Prayer

Father, thank You that You hear us when we pray. Thank You for opening Your throne room of grace where we can bring You our anxieties, our fears, and concerns, our need for help and lacking of strength. Thank You for Your promise of wisdom and Your promise to hear and answer. We are most blessed to be Yours but it isn’t always easy to live set apart from the world – to look and sound different than those around us, to have to say no when we would sometimes rather say yes – but You have called us to live in the world but not of it. So we seek Your wisdom, Your strength and peace and help to be courageous. May Your Spirit quickly convict us when we are looking or sounding too much like the world so that our testimony will always be a reflection of Christ in us that brings You glory and lights the way for others to know You. – In Jesus’ name, amen and amen!

A Pure Life

Scripture: Psalm 119:9-16 / SOAP: verse 11

In my heart I store up your words,

Oh my goodness, I love-love-love this passage. I can’t remember when I first ran across it, but I believe it was one of the first set of verses I put to memory back in the early nineties. I’ve probably said it here before, but I love passages of Scripture with straightforward, step-by-step instructions like this one.

The Psalmist asks, “How can a young person maintain a pure life?” From the same pen flows the simple but complex answer(s). Obviously, the SOAP verse is the crux of the answer: to “hide or store up God’s Word in our heart.” As we saw in the previous post, this is undoubtedly a chief means of combating the enemy in battle. Jesus is a testimony of this throughout His ministry, but very clearly in Matthew 4:1-11. However, by way of application to our everyday life we must also note all the other ways the Psalmist outlines living a pure life.

  • Living by God’s Word
  • Knowing God’s Word
  • Staying faithful to God’s Word
  • Focusing on God’s Behavior
  • Seeking God
  • Praying to God for Help
  • Praising God
  • Being taught by God
  • Delight in God’s way
  • Remember God’s instructions
  • Meditating on God’s precepts*

Is Living A Pure and Holy Life Possible?

Absolutely! Everything God has called us to is possible through Him, who called us by His own glory and goodness. However, it takes intentionality and consistency in choosing God’s way over yours. Applying the criteria the Psalmist lists takes a lifetime of dying to self and daily following Christ’s steps, which is basically what Christ told the crowd in the ninth chapter of Luke when He said: “If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.” When this is how we choose to live, when we intentionally and consistently choose God’s way over the world’s, we will find ourselves living the pure and holy life the Psalmist sought after and that God has called us to live.

God has already made us holy in Christ. He has already set us apart and saved us. Now he calls us to make choices that reflect who we already are.

Prayer of Response to God’s Word

Father, You have called us to be holy as You are holy. This can seem an overwhelming demand upon our life until we also remember that Your servant Peter said that You have empowered us to be all that You have called us to be. We are able to be set apart and holy because through Christ You have made us new creations – the old has gone and the new is here. Help us to live up to what You created us to be. Help us to live lives that are set apart from the world, lives that reflect You and not the world. Help us to die to self and live for You, to follow in the ways of Christ our Lord and Savior. Help us to remember that we are Yours and have been set apart for You. Help us to be hungry for your Word, to hide it in our heart so that we might not sin against You. Help us to stay faithful to Your Word that it might dictate our behavior. In this You will be glorified as we live as Your representatives in Christ – in Whose name I pray – Amen and amen!
