Stand Firm

Scripture:2 Thessalonians 2:1-17 (7-8)

Now regarding the arrival of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to be with him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, 2 not to be easily shaken from your composure or disturbed by any kind of spirit or message or letter allegedly from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. 3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not arrive until the rebellion comes and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction. 4 He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, and as a result he takes his seat in God’s temple, displaying himself as God. 5 Surely you recall that I used to tell you these things while I was still with you. 6 And so you know what holds him back, so that he will be revealed in his own time. 7 For the hidden power of lawlessness is already at work. However, the one who holds him back will do so until he is taken out of the way, 8 and then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will destroy by the breath of his mouth and wipe out by the manifestation of his arrival. 9 The arrival of the lawless one will be by Satan’s working with all kinds of miracles and signs and false wonders, 10 and with every kind of evil deception directed against those who are perishing, because they found no place in their hearts for the truth so as to be saved. 11 Consequently God sends on them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false. 12 And so all of them who have not believed the truth but have delighted in evil will be condemned.

Call to Stand Firm

13 But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. 14 He called you to this salvation through our gospel, so that you may possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 Therefore, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold on to the traditions that we taught you, whether by speech or by letter. 16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good thing you do or say.

Words of Warning

Today’s journey takes us down a path that is filled with more concerning, yet somewhat captivating, details of the last days. Seriously, I love to study God’s Word but have never been one to really delve into the study of or information about the end times Yet today, for some reason, this passage that I have read/studied before really and truly captivated my attention. Like Peter, in our previous journey, Paul warns the Church of Thessalonica to be alert to false teaching, specifically that they may receive news, allegedly from him saying that the day of the Lord had already come. He encourages the believers to let no one deceive them in any way. Paul makes it clear that that day will not come until the rebellion1 happens and the man of lawlessness2 is revealed.

See what I mean? Intrigue, danger, a possible forgery, deception and more, set the back drop for this portion of our journey. If you haven’t read the passage yet you may want to pause here and take some time to read, or even reread, the whole account.3

Words of Instruction and Encouragement Bring Hope

Paul subtly reminds the people that this isn’t the first time they’ve heard about this, and if they will recall what they have been taught they will realize the disturbing warning Paul has just issued, also comes with encouragement and the ultimate hope of the power and victory of the Lord Jesus Christ, who will destroy and wipe out the lawless one by the very breath of His mouth and by His promised return from heaven to earth! (if you were sitting here with me you would have just heard me shout hallelujah!) Oh the hope that is ours in Christ Jesus – clearly it explains why we dare to cry out: “Come, Lord Jesus, Come!”

and then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will destroy by the breath of his mouth and wipe out by the manifestation of his arrival.

The More We Know

One of the other things that captivated my mind was the part the Holy Spirit plays in all of this, namely the power He has to keep sin from being full blown. So, when I saw that the LGG devotion for today revolved around this portion of the passage, I knew I had to share it with you.

The following was borrowed and shared from the LGG Journal for Come, Lord Jesus, Come / p46

I know it may not always feel like it, but God, through the power of the Holy Spirit and His church, is actively holding back evil in our day. Some days it may be hard to imagine our world getting any worse when we see the evil that already exists in it. But Satan is not free to do as he wills. God is still God, He is still in control, and He is actively working in ways we don’t even know about right now. Amazingly, God has chosen us, His imperfect church, and the work He is doing through us to be one of His most powerful weapons in pushing back the darkness in this world. We can all think of the many defects of the church, but we shouldn’t underestimate the healing impact the body of Christ has on the world today.


By His incredible grace, God is restraining much evil in this world. When God takes away His restraining power in the “Last Days,” evil will multiply in unimaginable ways. However, this increase of evil will be for only a short time.


These “Last Days” verses are not to scare you about the future. These are meant to help you understand the “whys” of the events that are allowed and, when these events start to take place, to help you understand that, in the end, good prevails. Jesus will triumph over the “lawless one,”
and His power will display His glory. Satan will never win. Do not lose heart when you see lawlessness increase and the present days getting darker and darker. A new day always emerges from the darkness of night.

P R AY E R

Dear Lord, thank You for how You are restraining the evil in our world. Thank You for the reminder that the presence of the church in our world matters. Help us to be united around Your Word and empowered by Your love. Help us to be Your hands and feet to a hurting world. Protect us and our families during these days and help us to be bold and brave, always bringing You glory. Until that day, come, Lord Jesus, come. Amen.

Watching And Waiting

Scripture: Luke 17:26-37 (SOAP: 26-27)

26 “When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. 27 In those days, the people enjoyed banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat and the flood came and destroyed them all.

28 “And the world will be as it was in the days of Lot. People went about their daily business—eating and drinking, buying and selling, farming and building— 29 until the morning Lot left Sodom. Then fire and burning sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 Yes, it will be ‘business as usual’ right up to the day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day a person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack. A person out in the field must not return home. 32 Remember what happened to Lot’s wife! 33 If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it. 34 That night two people will be asleep in one bed; one will be taken, the other left. 35 Two women will be grinding flour together at the mill; one will be taken, the other left.”

37 “Where will this happen, Lord?” the disciples asked.

Jesus replied, “Just as the gathering of vultures shows there is a carcass nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near.”

Friends, the truth is clearly stated… Destruction is coming! For far too many people this is a warning of doom and gloom; but to those who are in Christ Jesus,1 it is a message of promise and eternal hope! Blessed be the name and salvation of our God and Savor Jesus Christ, who was and is and is to come!

PRAYER

Father, help us be found faithfully watching and waiting, looking above – filled with Your mercy and lost in Your love. Open our eyes and ears with an awareness of those who need You. Move our hearts with compassion for the lost, and let us speak with conviction and pray diligently with passion. Let this be the story that is on our lips – that Jesus is coming again and those who are His will be saved from the destruction that is promised to come to those who have not called upon the name of the Lord.2 And, to borrow from the prayer of the Love God Greatly writer, I pray Your Spirit will help us to “pause and take time to pray for our loved ones who do not know You. Please, Lord, open their hearts to You. I pray for salvation for all those in our lives who have not accepted Your free gift of salvation. Please, Lord, use us in their lives to help them see You better. Our lives are Yours, dear Jesus. Use us powerfully to help more people accept You as their Lord and Savior as we daily pray, come, Lord Jesus, come. Amen.

Be Patient and Courageous

Week 4, Day 5 of Come, Lord Jesus, Come (A Love God Greatly Study) The Return Is Near

Scripture Reading: James 5:7-12(SOAP: James 5:7-8)

So be patient, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s return. Think of how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the ground and is patient for it until it receives the early and late rains. 8 You also be patient and strengthen your hearts, for the Lord’s return is near.

Observations – Past and Present

James spent the first six verses of this chapter speaking to unbelievers. He warned them about the judgement that was coming their way because of how they were treating the believers. Now, he speaks to the believers who were being treated harshly; he encourages them to be patient and strengthen their hearts (or to be courageous as translated in the NLT) as they wait on Jesus’ return. James wants them to remember that their reward of eternity with the Lord will be worth the wait.

I love that James doesn’t just say be patient but he guides them in their patience with an analogy of a farmer waiting for the rains to water his crops (7). He knows that their suffering will wear on them and warns of turning on one another (9). He points them to the prophets and to Job, those who had waited and suffered before them, reminding them that they had seen that the Lord is full of compassion and mercy (10-11). Then finally, and somewhat out of context with his other words of encouragement, he instructs them to make sure that they maintain trustworthy reputations so that when they speak their words and promises are trustworthy and require no oath to be sworn (12).

Application – So, What Does This Mean For Us?

As believers, if we truly are living for the Lord, we will suffer not only the normal troubles of this life but at the hands of unbelieving oppressors. Therefore, we must heed James’ warning and –

  • be patient
  • be courageous, standing firm despite who or what comes against us
  • not turn against one another in our anger or frustration
  • know and remember God’s Word and the examples of those who served and waited patiently and courageously in the midst of their suffering
  • finally, but above all, live above reproach or question – so that our yes is yes and your no is no1

1We might think of saying to someone, “I swear on a stack of Bibles that I’m not lying,” or “I swear on my mother’s grave that I’ll pay you next Thursday.” Jesus forbid Christians from doing this, and James confirmed that teaching. The issue appears to be about honesty. Truthfulness should be the absolute norm for those who trust in Christ. Our simple yes or no should be completely binding since deception is never an option for us. If an oath is required to convince someone of our honesty or intent to be faithful, it suggests we may not be known for telling the truth in other circumstances.

Prayer – Response To God’s Word

Father, waiting isn’t easy and waiting on Your return is even more difficult! Strengthen us in our waiting – help us to be patient, as were the prophets and others, like Job, who have gone before us. And in this knowledge, may our hearts be courageous and firm in our faith as we wait on You. Let our minds be on You and the examples from Your Word rather than the chaos, confusion, and troubles that surround us. Finally Father, we live in a world where lying, manipulation, and questionable propaganda are the norm but if we are to be Your representatives we must be trusted. Help us live above reproach or question, so that people do not doubt our words. Let our yes be yes and our no be no – In Jesus’ name – Amen!

But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. 1 Peter 3:14-16  NLT

God All Victorious

Two Witnesses – WEEK 3, DAY 5 OF COME, LORD JESUS, COME – (A LOVE GOD GREATLY STUDY)
TODAY’S READING: Revelation 11:1-14 (SOAP: Revelation 11:12)

12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them: “Come up here!” So the two prophets went up to heaven in a cloud while their enemies stared at them.

OBSERVATIONS

God gives authority to two witnesses to prophesy for 1260 days

They will be dressed in sackcloth, which implies one or all of these definitions: mourning, repentance, austerity (someone who has stripped down to the simplest essentials of his physical life), or poverty (either physical or spiritual)

At the end of their allotted days to witness they will be conquered by the beast and their bodies will be placed in the street as a victorious celebration of their death, for their message had tormented those who lived on the earth.

BUT GOD … after three and a half days causes them to stand on their feet bringing fear to all those who saw it. Then the witnesses were called up to heaven and ascended in a cloud while their enemies watched.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US?

I think the biggest take away for me from this passage is to trust God, even when it looks like evil or the troubles of this life have prevailed. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

While the “two witnesses” are specific to the day and time John writes about we should none-the-less be reminded and inspired to remain faithful and always live as His humble witnesses.

RESPONSE TO GOD’S WORD

Father, thank You for these glimpses of victory in the battles yet to come. Your triumph over evil and Your provision of witnesses among the people bring hope and encouragement to our days of waiting. Thank You for Your promise of rapturing us to be with You and for Your power over all the forces of evil! We wait and trust Father – in Jesus’ name and power amen!

The Power of Faith

TODAY’S READING: Genesis 5:21-24; Hebrews 11:5 (SOAP: Hebrews 11:5)

By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death, and he was not to be found because God took him up. For before his removal he had been commended as having pleased God.

OBSERVATIONS: What does GOd Reveal

Very little is said about Enoch in the Scriptures, but it is clear by these few words that in the crooked and perverse generation in which Enoch lived – he chose a different path. His path was not the way of the world but the way of God – which, as the author of Hebrew writes, pleased God. The question is, how did he please God? Clearly, as Hebrews 11:5 points out, he was motivated by his faith. As a result the following observations jumped off the page at me – first,

Enoch is proof that faith is powerful.

and

God works on behalf of, and in accordance with our faith

Applying this: How Then do we live

What do we want our relationship with God to be like? I believe our answer to this question will ultimately determine how we apply this passage to our lives. As I was thinking about how to personally answer the question, my mind was flooded with the chorus of a favorite old hymn, that says, “and He walks with me and He talks with me and He tells me I am His own – and the joy I feel as we tarry there – none other has ever known.” I knew immediately this beautifully descriptive chorus was my answer. I want a one on one, let’s walk and talk, relationship with God. I want to feel the joy as we linger together, longing not to let anyone or anything separate us. Without question this leaves me wanting to imitate Enoch’s choice to walk with God by faith and seek to please Him.

Prayer RESPONSE TO GOD’S WORD

Father, Please help me to walk by faith and not by sight. Help my faith in You to motivate my thoughts, words, and deeds. Let my faith be purposeful and unshakable! So that when others see me or hear me they will see You and the light that comes from Your presence in me – In Jesus’ name – Amen!

I Am Coming Soon

Today’s Reading: Revelation 22:20-21 (SOAP: verse 12)

He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! 21 May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s holy people.

Beautiful Observations

Jesus, the one who testifies to these things John has written, confirms His impending return. This of course closes the New Testament much the same way that Malachi’s words closed the old, with a promise that Jesus, “the sun of righteousness” (Malachi 4:2) and the “bright morning star” (Rev. 22:16) is coming soon! To which John responds, and we often find ourselves echoing: “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!”

For me those could have been the closing words, but what John says next is somehow more beautiful. For, what better prayer could there be than for God’s sustaining grace(s) to be with His people as they wait. 1Paul Tripp writes of six different types of grace and acknowledges that there are even more. Grace is grace though, right? Well, yes. However, within that one word there is a treasure trove of gifts. Gifts like forgiveness from sins, acceptance into His family, His forever presence, His glorious grace-gift of freedom from the bondage of sin, and the grace of our faith made complete2– no more sin or sorrow, when “Everything will be restored, and we will worship in the presence of this amazing God of grace.” Until then, there is the grace-gift of enablement, which comes to us through His divine power and gives us everything we need to live a godly life.3

So What Does This Mean for us?

It means that …

  • we can trust that He will return (2 Corinthians 1:20)
  • we serve a God of Grace(s) (1 Peter 5:10, and others)
  • by His grace we are forgiven (1 John 1:9) and of accepted into His family (1 John 3:1-2)
  • He is always present with us (John 14:16)
  • He has equipped us with His power and strength to do what He has called us to do (2 Peter 1:3-4)
  • We’ve been set free from the law of sin and death (Rom 6:14-15)
  • and that will one day our faith will be made complete (Phil 1:6)

So again, I echo a prayer of John’s – as we wait upon His faithful promise – “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with all of His Holy People.” – And to this I say amen!

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you (and this by His Grace), will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Response to God’s Word

Father, God of Grace and mercy thank You for sending Jesus as a gift of salvation to all who believe. May those who have not yet believed – hear, believe, and be saved; and may those of us who have believed stand firm in our belief and faithful to Your calling, to make Christ known, as we wait on Your perfect timing and love. For we know that You have not forgotten, nor are You slow in keeping Your promise as some count slowness, but You, in Your goodness and love, are patient, not wishing that any should perish but that all should reach repentance! This is my prayer in Jesus’ Name – amen!

A Love God Greatly Study: Preview for Week 1, In The Last Days

Our Verse for the Journey: Hebrews 10:24-25

For this journey our verse(s) come from week 6 of our study. I encourage you to write the verses down on a note card or even several cards so that you have one in your car, your kitchen, your bedroom, your desk at work …. wherever you frequently find yourself. Read it at least 3 times every day, and over the course of the 6-week journey, begin trying to remember the words or phrases without looking. Lean on the Spirit for help – after all, John 14:26 says that our advocate, the Holy Spirit, was given, not only to teach us all things but to REMIND us of all He said.

I hope you enjoyed the first week of Come, Lord Jesus, Come. From words of encouragement to insight on the last days and reasons to hold on to the HOPE that we have in Christ – it’s just the beginning of what I believe will be a wonderful journey toward His return. If you haven’t read week one, I invite you to scroll back through the recent posts for this study, beginning October 2, 2022, and glean from them in preparation for week 2 which starts tomorrow.

Your Turn: What was your favorite day or most notable quote or Scripture that inspired you to hold on to the hope that is ours in Christ Jess.

Jesus was faithful in proclaiming His return, which is why in week 2 we will continually read the statement, “I will come” or “I am coming” … followed by the word back or soon. The words belong to Jesus and to every believer that hears them – they offer encouragement and hope. Look for them, soak them up so that you might cling to the hope that is ours in Christ Jesus, and then imitate Him by faithfully sharing them with others. In this He will be honored and others will share in our hope, and to God will be the glory!

WEEK 2 CHALLENGE: Jesus promised that He is coming back. This week, write out how this promise influences how you live.

  • Does it make you more intentional?
  • Dose it help you to have greater hope for the future?
  • Does it place more passion and urgency on your days as you know the time draws near?

Verse For the Journey: How are you doing with our verses from Hebrews 10:24-25? Remember, the Bible says we are “temporary residents and foreigners” and to “keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.” (1 Peter 2:11-12) To do this in any measure of obedience or success, we must know and hold fast to God’s Word.

One Who Holds Evil Back

Today’s Reading: 2 Thes 2:1-17 (SOAP: verses 7-8)

 For this lawlessness is already at work secretly, and it will remain secret until the one who is holding it back steps out of the way. 8 Then the man of lawlessness will be revealed, but the Lord Jesus will slay him with the breath of his mouth and destroy him by the splendor of his coming. 2 Thes. 2:7-8

Considering the amount of evil and “lawlessness” that is in the world today, would it surprise you to know that God is restraining evil even now? Well, that is what this passage is saying. Until the Holy Spirit, the only one who can truly hold back sin, is removed there is a restraint in force. Bibleref.com explains it like this:

Currently, the restrainer holds back lawlessness, but he will be removed someday. When he is out of the way, lawless activities will culminate through the man of lawlessness. But who is the restrainer? Only the Holy Spirit has the power to hold back sin from becoming full blown. He does this through His convicting ministry. Jesus taught that the Holy Spirit would convict the world of sin and righteousness and judgment (John 16:8). He will do so through Jesus’ followers, but at the rapture Jesus’ followers will be removed from the earth, and the earthly influence of Holy Spirit, who dwells in us, will be greatly diminished. While the Holy Spirit will still be on the earth, His unique sin-restraining ministry through saved believers will be gone: He will no longer convict the world of sin through believers. Therefore, lawlessness will reach an unprecedented manifestation.

Paul warns the Thessalonians, as he has others, not to be easily shaken by false messages. He encourages them that the last days and the events that have been described will all happen in God’s timing and that the “lawless one” will be destroyed. We would be wise to hold on to this same encouragement from Paul. How much easier will it be to hold on the hope we have in Christ when we know that He is going to one day destroy His enemies.

Response to the Word

Father, again – help me – help us – not be shaken by false messages. And keep us faithfully living as salt and light in Jesus’ Name!

The Last Days

Today’s Reading: 2 Timothy 3 (SOAP verses 1-5)

 But understand this, that in “the last days”* there will come times of difficulty.  For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,  heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

*Because we will read and discuss the term “in the last days” a lot in the coming weeks I wanted to define it a bit at the onset. We will learn more as we go but I believe it will be helpful to have some understanding now to help clarify what we are studying.

Acts 2:17; 2 Peter 3:3; James 5:3; and Hebrews 1:2 all make references to “the last days”. According to Bibleref.com, the term “last days’ is not always a reference to a time yet to come but can also refer to one already here – in this case – since the church age began.

understanding the Passage

Because the passage begins with, “But, understand this…” to truly understand Paul’s meaning we must look back to what was just said. In this case, 2 Timothy 2, where he has just been encouraging Timothy to be a good worker in the faith, an honorable vessel for the Lord, one that God would approve and who correctly explains the word of truth. Paul tells Timothy to live as one who flees youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart so that those who have been caught up in the ways of the devil might be turned to the Truth of God. This leads us to the passage before us today – “But understand this, in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,  heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good,  treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,  having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people …”

Paul saw the reality of these people in his day and they still grow worse today. Surely we understand Paul’s warning that the “last days” will be difficult ones. Because we understand it we would be wise to look at the rest of the passage and ask ourselves the following questions:

  • Whose teaching am I following? (2 Timothy 2:15-19)
  • Am I equipped well, so that I won’t be misled? (Ps. 119:11) (2 Tim. 3:16-17)
  • Am I confident and continuing in the Scriptures? (Pro. 4:20-24)
  • Am I dedicated, committed to follow) God? (Joshua 24:15) (Ps 37:5) (Luke 9:23-24)

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Response to the Word

Father – the day is coming and has now come and we see the reality of Paul’s words with our eyes! Help us to to be dedicated and stand firm in godly living. Do not let us be led astray. Do not let us grow weary and lose heart and please keep us alert to Your Spirit who reminds of Your Word and corrects us when we are wrong. Keep us alert not only to Your Word but to our brothers and sisters in Christ who are standing on shaky ground or who have wandered from the faith – that we might encourage and exhort them to stand firm. Move us to pray for those who are evil and those who are weak, that their eyes might be opened and their hearts might believe and be forever changed through salvation in Jesus Christ! – To Your Glory! – Amen
