A Pure Life

based on the LGG Study, The Armor of God / w6d5

Scripture: Psalm 119:9-16 / SOAP: verse 11

In my heart I store up your words,
so I might not sin against you.

Psalm 119:11

Oh my goodness, I love-love-love this passage. I can’t remember when I first ran across it, but I believe it was one of the first set of verses I put to memory back in the early nineties. I’ve probably said it here before, but I love passages of Scripture with straightforward, step-by-step instructions like this one.

The Psalmist asks, “How can a young person maintain a pure life?” From the same pen flows the simple but complex answer(s). Obviously, the SOAP verse is the crux of the answer: to “hide or store up God’s Word in our heart.” As we saw in the previous post, this is undoubtedly a chief means of combating the enemy in battle. Jesus is a testimony of this throughout His ministry, but very clearly in Matthew 4:1-11. However, by way of application to our everyday life we must also note all the other ways the Psalmist outlines living a pure life.

  • Living by God’s Word
  • Knowing God’s Word
  • Staying faithful to God’s Word
  • Focusing on God’s Behavior
  • Seeking God
  • Praying to God for Help
  • Praising God
  • Being taught by God
  • Delight in God’s way
  • Remember God’s instructions
  • Meditating on God’s precepts*

*Rules dictating behavior

Is Living A Pure and Holy Life Possible?

Absolutely! Everything God has called us to is possible through Him, who called us by His own glory and goodness. However, it takes intentionality and consistency in choosing God’s way over yours. Applying the criteria the Psalmist lists takes a lifetime of dying to self and daily following Christ’s steps, which is basically what Christ told the crowd in the ninth chapter of Luke when He said: “If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.” When this is how we choose to live, when we intentionally and consistently choose God’s way over the world’s, we will find ourselves living the pure and holy life the Psalmist sought after and that God has called us to live.

God has already made us holy in Christ. He has already set us apart and saved us. Now he calls us to make choices that reflect who we already are.

Commentary on 1 Peter 1:15-16 / Bibleref.org – See Going Further in the Journey
Prayer of Response to God’s Word

Father, You have called us to be holy as You are holy. This can seem an overwhelming demand upon our life until we also remember that Your servant Peter said that You have empowered us to be all that You have called us to be. We are able to be set apart and holy because through Christ You have made us new creations – the old has gone and the new is here. Help us to live up to what You created us to be. Help us to live lives that are set apart from the world, lives that reflect You and not the world. Help us to die to self and live for You, to follow in the ways of Christ our Lord and Savior. Help us to remember that we are Yours and have been set apart for You. Help us to be hungry for your Word, to hide it in our heart so that we might not sin against You. Help us to stay faithful to Your Word that it might dictate our behavior. In this You will be glorified as we live as Your representatives in Christ – in Whose name I pray – Amen and amen!

Silencing the Enemy

based on the LGG Study, The Armor of God / w6d4

Scripture: Matthew 4:1-11 / SOAP: 10-11
Matthew 4:10-11

I love love love this example from the life and trials of Jesus. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t love that He had to suffer the temptations of Satan, but seeing how Jesus handled it has been a life-saver and an encouragement to me over and over again. Our temptations may not always be the same but the way to handle them is. When we speak God’s Word to the enemy he will flee. James says, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you -” which I assure you is a tried and true promise I have experienced. The key is knowing how to resist the devil. I have found the only way to truly resist him – is to do as Jesus did and draw on the strength we find in God and His Word. I have also found and experienced the reality of praise silencing the enemy, as we read in Psalm 8:2 – where the Psalmist declares: “You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.”

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7

Verses ten and eleven of Matthew chapter four are beautiful words of encouragement and a testimony of how the enemy responds when we hit him, the father of lies, with the Truth. However, they are even more beautiful in the context of verses one through nine. If you missed them go back and read them – better yet open your Bible so that you can highlight or make note of Jesus’ response to every temptation that Satan hurled at him. Note how the enemy came at him at a time when Jesus would have been ‘famished’, as the NET version puts it. Read each verse and watch as Jesus uses God’s Word to stand firm against the enemy’s schemes and lies and note how Jesus had great victory in the battle – heard clearly in the words of verse eleven – “Then the devil left him”. We can have this same victory when we know and use the Word of God to put the devil in his place.

What’s it look like in the day to day?
  • Note cards with verses
  • Sticky notes on the car dashboard or the inside of the refrigerator at home
  • Praise and worship music playing in your car or your ear
  • Regular quality time with God in His Word
  • Praying the Word back to God
  • Working on memorizing God’s Word
  • Church
  • Small Groups
  • Bible Studies and/or discussions with others
  • Anything that gets you into God’s Word and God’s Word in you
Prayer of Response to God’s Word

Father, thank You for showing us ways to combat the enemy and not just showing us ways but equipping us with the armor and empowering us with Your Spirit and for the praise that flows from just knowing You as our God! There is power in Your name, power in Your Word, power in Praise, power in prayer, power in resisting the devil though the power of Your Spirit! Help us to faithfully spend time with You in Your Word and with Your people so that we might stand faithfully firm against the evil one. Help us to remember that he has no power over us for we belong to You. Help us to remember the words of John, who said – that greater is He that is in us than the one who is in the world! Help us to stay alert and stand ready in body, mind, and soul – to Your glory – Amen – in Jesus’ name.

Reflecting on the Journey

Human Standards or Christ’s?

based on the LGG Study, The Armor of God / w6d3

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 10:1-5 / SOAP: verse 3-5

For though we live as human beings, we do not wage war according to human standards, for the weapons of our warfare are not human weapons, but are made powerful by God for tearing down strongholds. We tear down argumentsand every arrogant obstacle that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obey Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

In the first two verses of the Scripture for today, Paul makes it clear that he doesn’t want to be seen as living according to human standards but rather by the meek and gentle qualities of Christ. As Paul has made known in many if not all of his letters – while we are human beings we are not to live by the old nature of the flesh but by the new nature of Christ and His Spirit in us. This is true in every situation of life, even, if not especially, the times when we seem to be at war.

When the enemy engages us in battle it is important to not fight back from our own strength or our human emotions – these get us no where in the spiritual battles. We must use the weapons that are made powerful by God, such as the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, as well as prayer and praise. Only with these will we be able to tear down the arguments or arrogant obstacles that set themselves up against the knowledge of God. Only with God’s Word will we be able to take our thoughts captive, making them obedient to Christ. God’s Word is not only a light to our path and a lamp to guide our feet but it is His power for every situation we will face. It is His power against sin and for salvation, and for life and breath and peace and all else we have need of. With it we have victory and without it we face anxieties and sure defeat.

Prayer of Response

Father, Your Word is a lamp to our feet it is a light that guides us in the way we should go, it brings joy and strength and peace to every day. Through it we have hope and know Your love. Help us to know Your Word Father and to use it well in the spiritual battles of this world. Help us to lift up our prayers and praises to You faithfully for in them there is great power to defeat the enemy! Thank You that this world is not our final home and that Your Word and the truth of who You are and what You’ve done is ours to know and use as victorious weapons in the battles that wage around us. Thank You for not only equipping us but for being with us in the battles – for we know that You never leave us or forsake us – and we know that we do not fight alone!

Don’t Let Your Guard Down

based on the LGG Study, The Arrmor of God / w6d1

Scripture: Ephesians 6;10-18 / SOAP verses 17-18

Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Ephesians 6:17-18

Hopefully, after six weeks of starting Mondays with this passage, we have all become more familiar with the wisdom, truth, and help it offers us – so that we will not let down our guard. May we keep the armor of God on 24/7, 365 days of the year – ready to help us stand firm and resist the devil’s schemes.

Let’s not forget the necessity of suiting up daily with the whole armor of God. Let’s make it a daily practice to put on…

  • the Belt of Truth
  • the Breast Plate of Righteousness – and
  • the Shoes of Peace

May we faithfully…

  • Take up the Shield of Faith – and
  • Put on the Helmet of Salvation and
  • take the Sword of the of the Spirit

And don’t forget to …

  • pray at all times… for all believers everywhere

We will study the final piece of our armor this week, which is the sword of the Spirit – defined by Paul as the Word of God. Then, we will, at Paul’s suggestion, cover it all with prayer and an alertness. Remember this armor belongs to God and we will not be successful using any of it without first seeking His strength and power as Paul instructed us in the beginning of our study.

“Be devoted to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving.”

Colossians 4:2
Did You Know?

I found a fascinating note about the Sword of the Spirit that helped me understand just how powerful this offensive weapon really is. When I picture a “sword” I pictured a long sheath like sword, however, according to BIbileref.com the sword Paul describes is a short-bladed sword, easy to carry and draw quickly in combat. It is meant to kill and defeat the enemy during attack.

God’s Word is able and meant to be used like this in our spiritual battles. Christ Himself sets the example for us as we read in Matthew 4:1-11, where we find three examples of Jesus using the Word of God to defeat the enemy. I encourage you to read how He did it and not to miss the ending when the devil left him alone. May we be quick to follow His lead by being prepared with the Word whenever the enemy strikes.

Our Secret Weapon

When Jesus told His disciples He would be leaving them He also told them about another that would come and be with them so that they could carry on the work of the Father. Here in our passage today, Paul tells them to “pray in the Spirit,” the One that Christ said would be their helper.

The Advocate, the Holy Spirit will teach us all things and will remind us of everything [Christ] has told us.
John 14:26

Reflecting on the Journey

What is the importance of praying at all times?

Response to God’s Word

Father, hide Your Word in our hearts that we might stand firm in the battles with temptation and all of the devil’s schemes. May we be sensitive to Your Spirit and powerful in Your might. Help us to remember that the battle belongs to You and You have empowered us with all that we need to stand firm. Remind us to stay devoted to prayer not only for ourselves but for the body of Christ and as the enemy wages war against Your people. May we not be detoured by his tactics and lose sight of the call to spread the Gospel. In Jesus’ Name – Amen!

Shoes

based on the Love God Greatly Study, The Armor of God, w3d1

Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-18 / SOAP: verse 15

 – by fitting your feet with the preparation that comes from the good news of peace,

Ephesians 6:15

This verse is not meant to stand alone, so let’s look again at the ones that come before it. As you read, notice all of the instructions we are given for living out our faith well –

Finally, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power11 Clothe yourselves with (the full armor of God), so that you will be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.13 For this reason, (take up the full armor of God) so that you may be able to stand your ground on the evil day, (and having done everything, to stand.) 14 Stand firm therefore, by fastening the belt of truth around your waistby putting on the breastplate of righteousness, by fitting your feet with the preparation that comes from the good news of peace

The Responsibility is Ours

As believers we have been saved by grace through faith, it is a free and forever gift of God. That being said we are given responsibilities as believers that we must strive for the rest of our Christian life. James said, “Faith without works is dead.” He encourages the believer to not just read or hear the Word but to live it out. Living out our faith doesn’t have to be a mystery, that is the purpose of His Word and the examples set before us in Christ and the other disciples and men and women of faith throughout Scripture

So far in our study we have been given the responsibility of “putting on” the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness. In today’s soap verse we have been given the task of “fitting our feet with the preparation that comes from the good news of peace.” This is the third piece of armor we are called to wear in preparation for battle. We will spend the week learning more about this peace, what it is, and how to apply/wear it well. Remember we are to suit up in the “full armor” so that we can stand against the schemes of the devil (11,13), and not just stand but we are to stand firm (14).

Shoes

For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.

Ephesians 6:15

I love the way the New Living Translation and others translate verse 15 using the word “shoes”. I loved going barefoot as a child and still to this day I would rather have my shoes off than on, but I have learned that there are times where it is very helpful to wear my shoes. It is also helpful to wear the right shoes. For instance, I would not wear my snow boots on a sandy beach nor my beach shoes on a snow walk. I love my comfy slip on shoes but I know not to wear them on a three-mile walk. The same is true of the soldier who has his belt and and breastplate in place, he knows he has to have have his feet in the right shoes in order to use the other pieces of his armor well. Just like the shoes of the soldier make him ready for battle the “Gospel of peace” makes the believer ready for spiritual battle. We will look more intently at what this all means in the days to come – but for today suit up with the belt of TRUTH and the breastplate of righteousness – and don’t forget to fit your feet with the peace that comes from the Gospel, the Good News about Christ.

The gospel is, broadly speaking, the whole of Scripture; more narrowly, the gospel is the good news concerning Christ and the way of salvation.

Body Armor

based on the Love God Greatly study, The Armor of God / w2d1

Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-18 / SOAP 14

Stand firm therefore, by fastening the belt of truth around your waist, by putting on the breastplate of righteousness

Ephesians 6:14
In the first week of our study we looked briefly at the second piece of armor but focused primarily on the first, which is the “belt of truth.” This week we will spend time exploring the breastplate and learning how to implement it. Just as the belt of truth is vital to our battles – so it is with the breastplate of righteousness, which “refers to the righteousness purchased for us by Jesus at the cross.1

1https://www.gotquestions.org/breastplate-of-righteousness.html

The Second Piece

The second piece of armor that Paul mentions is the “breastplate of righteousness” or, as the NLT translates it, “the body armor of God”. I love that description! We must understand this is not a righteousness of our own (Romans 3:10-12) that protects us but rather the righteousness of Christ that has been imputed to us (Romans 4:22-25) – and covers us in such a way that it defends us against the evil one and the evil he entices us with. Just as the breastplate a soldier wore was meant to protect his heart and other vital organs – so it is with the righteousness we received from Christ through faith, a faith, which according to gotquestions.org – “guards our hearts against the accusations and charges of Satan and secures our innermost being from his attacks.” What a beautiful definition of the job of “the breastplate of righteousness”, the reality of which should move our hearts to gratitude and worship, and surely a faithfulness in putting it on daily.

At salvation, a “breastplate” is issued to each repentant sinner. It is specially designed by God to protect our heart and soul from evil and deception. Our own righteous acts are no match for Satan’s attacks (Isaiah 64:6). The breastplate of righteousness has Christ’s name stamped on it, as though He said, “Your righteousness isn’t sufficient to protect you. Wear mine.”

Putting It On

We are instructed to “put on” this armor, which implies that we do not automatically wear it all the time. Putting on the armor of God requires a decision on our part. To put on the breastplate of righteousness, we must first have the belt of truth firmly in place. Without truth, our righteousness will be based upon our own attempts to impress God. This leads to legalism or self-condemnation (Romans 8:1). We choose instead to acknowledge that, apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5). We see ourselves as “in Christ” and that, regardless of our failures, His righteousness has been credited to our account.

We “put it on” by seeking God and His righteousness above everything else (Matthew 6:33). We make Him and His ways our dwelling place (Psalm 91:1). We delight in His commands and desire for His ways to become our ways (Psalm 37:4119:24111Isaiah 61:10). When God reveals an area of change to us, we obey and allow Him to work in us. At the point where we say “no” to God, we open a little crack in the armor where Satan’s arrows can get through (Ephesians 6:16).

As we wear Christ’s breastplate of righteousness, we begin to develop a purity of heart that translates into actions. Wearing this breastplate creates a lifestyle of putting into practice what we believe in our hearts. As our lives become conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29), our choices become more righteous, and these godly choices also protect us from further temptation and deception (Proverbs 8:20Psalm 23:3).

PUTTING IT ON [borrowed from Gotquestions.org]

The “righteousness” Paul is referring to can not be bought or earned – it belongs to Christ alone and comes to us only through faith in Christ – a faith, which as gotquestions.org explains, guards our hearts against the accusations and charges of Satan and secures our innermost being from his attacks. The following details from got questions.org will be helpful to our understanding and implementing the “breastplate of righteousness” that has been so graciously given to us.

  • We “put it on” by seeking God and His righteousness above everything else (Matthew 6:33).
  • At salvation, a “breastplate” is issued to each repentant sinner. Wear mine.”
  • We are instructed to “put on” this armor, which implies that we do not automatically wear it all the time.
    • Guard Against Wearing it Incorrectly
      • When armor is abused or worn incorrectly, it can malfunction. Likewise, there are several factors that can interfere with the effectiveness of our spiritual breastplate. Carelessness (1 Peter 5:8), unbelief (Hebrews 3:12), abusing grace (Romans 6:1–2), or disobedience (1 John 3:4Hebrews 4:6) can hinder our ability to stand firm and defeat the enemy in our lives. When we tolerate sin, refuse to forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10–11), rely on personal righteousness (Titus 3:5), or allow earthly concerns to crowd out time for an intimate relationship with God, we, in effect, take off the breastplate of righteousness, minimizing its power to protect us.
      • We need our breastplate of righteousness in place in order to gain the victory specified in 2 Corinthians 10:5: “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” When we quickly reject heretical ideas, idolatry, and the “counsel of the ungodly” (Psalm 1:1) and instead “keep our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2), we keep our breastplate securely fastened.

More on the Breastplate: “A Roman’s breastplate would typically be made from bronze or chain mail and would cover the vital body parts (heart, lungs, stomach). Righteousness, or doing what is right, is essential to protecting the life of the believer through spiritual battle. Also, the breastplate is a primary means of identification: this is one of the clearer ways for soldiers to recognize each other in battle. Likewise, a Christian’s behavior is meant to identify them to the world, and other believers, as a follower of Christ.” The breastplate would be attached to the belt and if the belt wasn’t applied correctly the breastplate would fall right off leaving the soldier in grave jeopardy. further evidence that the armor was intended to be worn in full not in pieces. Truth and Righteousness

based on the Love God Greatly study, The Armor of God / w1d3

Scripture/SOAP: Ephesians 6:13-14

For this reason, take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand your ground on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm therefore, by fastening the belt of truth around your waist, by putting on the breastplate of righteousness,

Ephesians 6:13-14 NET
First Things First

Before we jump into the first two pieces of armor let’s not miss the reason and instruction that come with the armor.

The Reason is found in verses 10-12, namely to stand against the “schemes of the devil”, our real and present enemy, He is evil (the ruler of darkness, part of the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens…) he is dangerous and deadly to those caught unaware and unarmed. However, when we follow the instructions Paul gives, specifically “putting on the full armor of God, we will be able to withstand the devil’s plots and schemes and all manners of evil meant to steal, kill, and destroy the children of God.

Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.

Ephesians 6:13-14 NLT

Not a Three-Piece-Suit

I especially appreciate the NLT version of this verse, as it makes clear that our armor is not to be treated like a three-piece-suit where you can wear the pants and jacket and forego the vest or the pants and vest and forego the jacket. No, Paul stresses that it is to be, as the NLT translates, every piece, that is if you want to still be standing when the battle is over – and not just standing – but standing firm – unwavering! We are to be covered from head-to-toe, specifically and intentionally covered and ready for warfare.

It takes the whole “suit of armor” to successfully stand against the enemy – me, from the inside-out

The Belt and BreastPlate / truth and Righteousness
  1. The Belt of Truth is listed first, which I love because ‘truth’ is not only one of the names applied to Jesus in John 14:6, but it is also the name applied to the Word of God in John 17:17. It seems to be that God’s Truth is the very foundation of our salvation since faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word [truth] of God as Paul discloses in Romans 10:17.
    • Here’s something interesting though. This piece of the armor isn’t simply about the truth, but rather how the the truth helps and protects us – which is seen most clearly when we understand why Paul used the metaphor of the “belt”. I read it somewhere, years ago but found it again today on the Billy Graham website . The writer explainsthat – “In ancient times, a warrior’s belt was essential for survival. It not only held his weapons; it cinched his tunic at the waist, allowing him to move about freely.” The writer also included this analogy, “Just as a belt gave the warrior freedom of movement and a way to defend himself, the belt of truth provides spiritual freedom and protection for those who belong to Jesus Christ.”
    • Putting it on: Simply start with Scripture. Read it, listen to it, study it on your own or with a group, sit under the teaching of it, keep it open on your app or written on cards and post-it-notes where you will see it often. The idea is to be saturated with it and just as a belt holds up pieces of clothing it is meant to have an affect on the rest of the armor.
  2. The second piece of armor that Paul mentions is the “breastplate of righteousness” which we study in-depth in our second week.

Draw Near: Week 4, Thursday The Sword of the Spirit

Today’s Scripture – Ephesians 6:14-18; Psalm 33:4 (SOAP: Ephesians 6:14-18)

Ephesians 6:14-18

Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.  17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.
