More than Appearance

Based on the LGG Study, Abiding in Jesus, w2d3

Read and SOAP: John 15:6

If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out like a branch, and dries up; and such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and are burned up.

John 15:6 NLT

I’m sure you’ve heard it said, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” There is much truth in this statement, which came to mind as I was reading through some commentaries on today’s passage. One particular statement about putting on an appearance of faith but not really being connected to the True Vine highlighted the truth more than any other. Sadly, I have not only been the one who thought someone was connected to Jesus when they weren’t, but I have also been the one who appeared connected when, in reality, I was just going through the motions.

Why does it matter?

Earlier in our journey, as Bibleref.com points out, “Jesus distinguished between branches in a vine and branches, which abide in the vine.” In other words, “Merely being close to the source of life is not enough; neither is being intertwined with other branches. For putting on the appearance of faith is not the same as being born again.1” It is crucial to understand this, as “Only branches truly connected to the source of life, the true vine, will bear fruit.” Another critical and difficult truth of Jesus’ teaching here is that – “A good vinedresser (gardener) cuts out those dead, fruitless branches and destroys them. The analogy Jesus presents here is not about the loss of salvation, which is impossible. Rather, His message is about those who ‘put on’ an appearance of faith, but are disconnected from the True Vine that gives eternal life.”

We must remember, “bearing true spiritual fruit” is only possible through the Vine – Christ ‘in’ us. And – that fruit, like any other good works or holiness, is always presented as evidence of salvation, never as a requirement for it.

Bibleref.com/John 15:6

Reflection questionAre there areas in your life where you feel disconnected or spiritually dry? How might renewing your connection with Jesus help restore these areas and allow you to bear the fruit He desires for you?

The More We Know

While there are many in the church today who claim to be Christians, if all they produce is bad, rotten fruit, they are not true disciples of Jesus and have never been attached to the true Vine. … At the same time, we may be confident that if we have truly surrendered ourselves to Jesus, the Father will make sure that we bear fruit. He has promised it. He will judge those who don’t belong, but He prunes and disciplines those who do. He will cut away the dead branches but cultivate the living ones.” From the LGG Journal, p75

  1. “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’ Matthew 7:21-23 ↩︎

Inerrancy of Scripture

based on the LGG Study, Firm Foundation w5d3

Scripture: (Read and SOAP) Psalm 19:7 and Proverbs 30:5

The law of the Lord is perfect
and preserves one’s life.
The rules set down by the Lord are reliable
and impart wisdom to the inexperienced.

Psalm 19:7

Every word of God is purified
he is like a shield for those who take refuge in him.

Proverbs 30:5
Observations of the Journey

Knowing that God inspires every Scripture and that He makes no mistakes – it stands to reason that the Bible is without errors. It is entirely pure and true. It is the truth that is pointed out in our passages for today’s journey – passages that validate the statement that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. However, as qotquestions.org points out concerning the inerrancy of Scripture and its importance – “We’ve grown accustomed to being lied to, and many people seem comfortable with the false notion that the Bible, too, contains errors.”

While I believe it is true that, as a whole, we have grown accustomed to being lied to and sadly even to telling lies, but friends, we must not even entertain the thought that the Bible contains errors. For, if there is even one error in God’s Word then we cannot trust any of His Word. “It is either trustworthy or it is not.1

Application: Living out the Journey

The world is full of those who lie or cast doubt on God’s Word – pray against any doubts, be ready with an answer for the hope in You, and look for and remember the ways You have seen the truth of God in and around you through personal experiences and life situations. Build your life on the unshakable truth of God’s Word and stand firm on the firm foundation of your faith.

Be a Berean

Please don’t settle for my posted opinion/belief or quoted words from trusted commentaries. Read/listen to the words of Jesus Himself, who identifies God’s Word as “truth” when He prayed His High Priestly Prayer, saying to the Father, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17). As gotquestions.org explains, “In this verse, Jesus communicates two important facts: God’s Word is truth—God’s Word equals truth—and it’s by that truth that God sanctifies us, or sets us apart for holy service to Himself.”2

God is holy (Isaiah 6:3), and that quality makes it impossible for Him to lie. The holiness of God is His moral and ethical perfection, His absolute integrity that sets Him apart from all His creatures. God’s holiness is thus related to His transcendence. God does not conform to any standard of purity; He is the standard. God is absolutely holy with an infinite purity incapable of being changed. Because of His holiness, when God speaks, He will not and cannot lie. He never deceives; He never distorts or misrepresents what He says or does. Lying is against His nature.

gotquestions.org/

Because God cannot lie, God’s Word, the Bible, is completely trustworthy (1 Kings 8:56Psalm 119:160). “Every word of God is flawless” (Proverbs 30:5).

Can God Lie?
Prayer of Response to the Journey

Father, thank You for giving me Your perfect Word. Like You, It is faithful and true – it is my joy and peace and strength. It is my help in times of trouble. Help me to build my life on its truths. Use it to strengthen my faith and guide me as I seek to live according to Your Word. – In Jesus’ name – Amen

WEEK 6, TRUTH OVER LIES: OVERCOMING LIES

OVERCOME BY: THINKING ON WHAT IS TRUE

Read: Romans 12:2 and SOAP: Philippians 48

Truth: And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8 NLT

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
  • How does thinking on what is true help us overcome lies?

To combat lies, we must think about what is true.

Vision Check

By faith, when Moses was born, his parents hid him[a] for three months, because they saw the child was beautiful and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24 By faith, when he grew up, Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be ill-treated with the people of God than to enjoy sin’s fleeting pleasure. 26 He regarded abuse suffered for Christ[b] to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for his eyes were fixed on[c] the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt without fearing the king’s anger, for he persevered as though he could see the one who is invisible.  Hebrews 11:23-27

Father, you are Good, Amid the distractions of the morning, the frustrations and hurts and concerns of this morning and the past week – in the middle of it all I am reminded that You are God and You are good. You are TRUSTWORTHY for You are FAITHFUL and TRUE! Help me, like Moses, to keep my eyes focused on You, looking forward to Your promise of life everlasting through the Messiah, Jesus Christ! Help my vision not be blurred by the pleasures and privileges of this life or blinded by the sufferings. Instead, help me to look to You above and before everything and everyone – and in this, may You find pleasure and be glorified!

Some trust in chariots some in horses but I will trust in the name of the name of the Lord, my God. Psalm 20:7
