Prayer and the Word

Scripture: Psalm 119:149-152

Listen to me because of your loyal love.
O Lord, revive me, as you typically do.
150 Those who are eager to do wrong draw near;
they are far from your law.
151 You are near, O Lord,
and all your commands are reliable.
152 I learned long ago that
you ordained your rules to last.

While I am not easily intimidated – when I am – whether it be due to those who are eager to do wrong or simply those who have a surly personality, I have learned to trust that when God is near (and He always is) not even the toughest or most fear-inducing person or situation can overpower the peace and joy of His presence. If, for some reason, I cannot sense His presence, I have learned to trust His heart, which He has revealed to us in His Word.

I love the opening words of this passage, “Listen to me because of your loyal love. O Lord.” We should imitate this posture of humility in all of our prayers— coming not as one who depends on his own goodness or worthiness but on the faithful love of the Lord. However, I believe the keywords in this passage are found in verse 151, where the Psalmist declares the Lord’s nearness and reliability. When we know these truths and stand upon them as the promises of God, we will not be shaken in the face of danger. This isn’t to infer that we will never be afraid, but that when we are afraid, we will trust in the one who has said/promised: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you, I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

One commentator said it like this: “Though the wicked are near to injure, because far from God’s law, He is near to help, and faithful to His word, which abides forever.” –

Encouragement for the journey

Humble yourselves before God and pray. One of the ways we humble ourselves before God is to cast on Him all of our cares/anxieties – not just the ones we think might be important enough but all of them because He cares for us.1 Prayer is one of, if not the greatest, privileges and assets of the Christian’s life. We have been given direct and bold access2 to God and every assurance that we can trust Him to not only hear but answer.3

Like the Psalmist, tell God your concern(s),

Those who are eager to do wrong draw near;
they are far from your law.

Psalm 119:150

and then remind yourself who He is and what He has said or promised.

You are near, O Lord,
and all your commands are reliable.

Psalm 119:151

If you aren’t sure how to pray or prayer itself intimidates you, remember that God has given us His Word, which is filled with untold examples of praying. To pray God’s Word back to Him is both freeing and refreshing, and I believe brings God great delight. 4

Bridge to Shame Breaker Wk 2 December 31, 2020

One of the things I love about God is His Faithfulness. Trust is hard for me but with God I don’t have to worry about whether or not I can trust Him. It isn’t simply that there are verses that declare Him to be faithful; don’t get me wrong, since we walk by faith and not by sight this would be enough, but His actions bear witness to His Word. Or, as our verse says – “He ACTS in a faithful manner -“. Because He does I know that He is reliable. He is a dependable REFUGE. And, there is truly NO ONE on earth or in heaven like Him. No wonder David wrote in Psalm 16:8 – “I constantly trust in the LORD; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” As we head out of one very challenging year and into all the unforeseen of another – may David’s bold and confident statement become our mantra. May it define us and become our strength both day and night, on our mountain-tops and in our valleys. May it be a light of encouragement to those who are watching. When troubles come and they see that we aren’t shaken perhaps they will ask why – and may we be ready with an answer – like David – for the HOPE that is within us! The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my Savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me,  and my place of safety. Psalm 18:2

A Faithful and Enduring Love

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for His loyal love endures. Psalm 136:1

Today’s passage of Scripture is not new to me. Morning after morning my prayer journal entry begins with: “Father, You are good …”. The words that follow are never the same, sometimes they flow from a thought prompted by a song, or a particular praise, or an attribute of God, and sometimes from another verse or passage of Scripture. Often, that Scripture has been Psalm 136:1, though typically I write it from the NIV version which says: “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, For His love endures forever”. I have recently started reading from the NET translation which exchanges “His love endures forever” with “His loyal love endures.” The word ‘loyal’ struck me as a very strong word – a word bearing the same weight as forever – yet some how with a deeper, richer implication.

Check out this list of synonyms associated with the word loyal: faithful, true, tried and true, devoted, constant, steadfast, dependable, reliable, trusted, trustworthy, unchanging, unwavering, unswerving, dedicated, committed, firm, stable, steady, and unfailing. Yes, and amen! That is my God! I can trust Him because throughout my lifetime He has been tried and true, proven reliable and trustworthy. I have learned repeatedly, through experience, the truth of the statement – “when you can’t see His hand trust His heart”. I can testify to the truth that He is unfailing and dependable and committed to the relationship we have as Father and daughter. When I disappoint Him His love is stable and unswerving, He does not turn away from me but with unwavering devotion He pursues me. Suddenly, I have a fresh understanding and appreciation for this verse and I am moved with the Psalmist to give thanks to the God of gods, my God, whose loyal love endures.
