THE JOURNEY (SCRIPTURE AND OBSERVATION)

Scripture: Luke 4:1-15; and SOAP: 2 Corinthians 3:17

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is present, there is freedom.
2 Corinthians 4:17

I can’t help but start with the passage from Luke and the story of Jesus in the wilderness being tempted by the devil. This lesson on dealing with temptation has been a huge help to me in my walk of faith through the years. I have benefited greatly from the example of Jesus’ method of dealing with temptation and have put specific verses to memory to use as weapons of warfare when the enemy comes at me. However, this time, as I began reading, what caught my attention were the words: “Then Jesus, full of the Spirit … led by the Spirit … and returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit.” I love that Luke writes with details like, “Then Jesus,” which is a follow-up statement to the preceding verses that told of Jesus’ baptism and the heavens opening and the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus like a dove.

One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened, ²²and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”

Jesus, or the Word, as John describes Him in John 1:1, was victorious over the devil!

Though His fasting had emptied Him of food, it was clear that Jesus was filled, not only with the Spirit but also with the Word, and that the words He chose and boldly spoke to the devil overcame every temptation hurled at Him by the devil. The Word of God was the victory that empowered Jesus to return from the wilderness and eventually begin His public preaching. 🦋

LIVING THE JOURNEY (APPLICATION)

Like Jesus, we are full of the Spirit and led by the Spirit – and when we choose to keep in step with the Spirit we will be victorious over the enemy. Consider the words Jesus spoke to His disciples about the Holy Spirit before His ascension into Heaven, “But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told You.” When we keep in step with the Spirit, walking in and by the Word of God, the Spirit will help us to use the Word to overcome the enemy just like Jesus did. While we may not ‘fast’ for forty days as Jesus did in this extraordinary event, we can make it a habit to pray – Father empty me of me and of the things of this world and fill me up with You, Your Son abiding in me and I in Him, and Your Spirit leading me, teaching me, and reminding me of everything You have said.

PRAYER FOR THE JOURNEY

Father empty me of me and of the things of this world and fill me up with You, Your Son abiding in me and I in Him, and Your Spirit leading me, teaching me, and reminding me of everything You have said. For where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom from the power of sin and its pull or hold on me! Thank You, Father, that it isn’t the name “Christian” that makes a believer strong, but rather it is the Spirit, Who is our strength and Who intercedes for us in my weaknesses. I am most blessed to belong to You!

For the One Who Believes

Scripture: Mark 9:14-29/SOAP: 24-25

Immediately the father of the boy cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” ²⁵Now when Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
Mark 9:24-25

The Object of One’s Faith is Critical

In my studies of this passage I found a quote by Gotquestions.org that is helpful if not crucial to understanding the scene with the demon possessed boy and the father’s desire for Jesus to heal him.

The believing one has power only due to the one he believes in.

Why do I believe this is so important? Because the healing clearly hinged upon what or who the father placed his belief in. The father’s earlier statement that the disciples had failed to heal his son most likely had affected the man’s belief that Jesus would be able to heal the child; at the very least, it had caused him to doubt. So, Jesus repeats the man’s words – possibly to point out the doubt and emphasize that one must believe in Jesus and His ability to cast out the demon. Whatever the reason for Jesus’ words, the father then proclaims his belief, showing he understood the importance of believing by asking that Jesus would help him past any unbelief – and, at Jesus’ command, the boy was healed, highlighting the truth that the one who believes has power only due to the one he believes in.

Bibleref.com makes this statement concerning the passage: “True faith doesn’t presume that God will do what we want but that God can do what He wants.”

Prayer Response to the Word

Father, help me to continually center my belief on You. It is so easy to get caught up in situations or struggles and cry out with our eyes on the problem rather than on You the only one who can truly answer our requests – be it healing or provision or wisdom. Help me to remember that faith doesn’t mean that You can or will do what I want but that You can do what You want to. In those moments of life when I am desperate, do not allow my desperation to overshadow my belief in You. And, as this father prayed – so pray I – “help my unbelief”. – In Him who I have placed my Trust – Thank You and Amen!

Greater is He that is in You

Scripture: 1 John 4:4-6 / SOAP: verse 6

We are from God; the person who knows God listens to us, but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.
1 John 4:6

This passage, particularly verse 4, always reminds me of the song, “Greater is He that is in Me” or at least of the first verse, which highlights the Ephesian passage we studied earlier in our previous posts; and the chorus, which is actually patterned after verse 4 of today’s passage from 1 John. Read them, sing them if you know the tune (if not you might want to look it up), I sing the song often when I find myself challenged or up against the enemy and it truly helps.

Verse One:

Satan’s like a roaring lion roaming to and fro’

Seeing whom he may devour, the Bible tells us so

Many souls have been his prey to fall in some weak hour

But God has promised us today His overcoming power.

Chorus:

Greater is He that is in me

than He that is in the world.

Because we are God’s children His Spirit lives in us and gives us understanding of the Scriptures. This understanding empowers us who are saved or being saved but it seems like mere foolishness to those who are not saved. This is helpful knowledge as we face a myriad of tactics by the enemy and his armies, tactics that require us to be alert and ready. Being ready and alert with the truth we will be able to identify “the spirit of deceit”; and as John describes here, we will recognize those who belong to God and possess the Spirit of truth and those who do not.

Know the Enemy

Scripture: Ephesians 6:12 / SOAP 6:12

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.
Ephesians 6:12

Just as it is crucial for us to be prepared for the battles that are lurking around us, it is equally important to know who our enemy is and who he is not. Why? Because if we do not know him we will more easily fall prey to his lies and deceptions when he comes for us. Likewise, if we do not understand who he ‘is not’, ie “flesh and blood,” or as Bibleref.com explains, our enemies are “not people or objects. Instead, they are “part of the demonic armies”, or as Paul defines them: “rulers… powers… world rulers of darkness… and spiritual forces of evil.” They are dangerous and can only be overcome when we are standing ready in the strength and the power of our God.

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

It isn’t enough to know what God has said, Eve knew what He said and she even repeated it to the serpent [the enemy] but she still succumbed and submitted to the enemy’s lie and to the desire of the flesh and eye that the lie had stirred within her. Make no mistake regardless of the form our enemy takes, his goal is to lead us away from God – which ultimately leads us to sin.

Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
James 4:17

Sin, “our true opponent.”¹ has a name. Eve knew him as the serpent in Genesis chapter three. Here, in Ephesians chapter six, Paul refers to him as the devil – but he has a host of other names and demons that work to do his bidding. They have one purpose in mind and that is to steal, kill, and destroy all those who faithfully follow after God. Our only hope of survival is standing firm in the strength and power of God and implementing the full resources of His armor. This may, at times, seem impossible but consider the encouragement of Peter, who said, “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, [God] has given us great and promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires” (2 Peter 1:3-4). Like Adam and Eve, we try to explain away our sin or cast blame onto the ‘enemy’, but the truth is – we, like them, are without excuse for our sinful choices. So, may we heed the wisdom and encouragement of Paul’s words – to prepare ourselves and know our enemy so that we might stand firm and begin to suit up in the weeks ahead as we learn to implement the “full armor of God.”

By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life.

Prepare Yourself

Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-18; SOAP / vs. 10-11

¹⁰Finally, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power. ¹¹Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
Ephesians 6:10-11

Paul has been giving instructions to the Church of Ephesus on obedience, giving specific instructions to children, parents, slaves, and masters. As he wraps up the teaching on obedience, he tells them how to remain faithful and obedient to God, or to use Paul’s words, “how to stand firm.” He starts with the reminder that their strength and power must come from the Lord and there is one that plots against them. However, it’s the next phrase that captured my attention:“Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand [against the schemes of the devil].” If I were teaching this in the classroom, I would undoubtedly be writing this on a whiteboard, underlining and circling and highlighting every word of this sentence. Why? Because it is crucial to the rest of the passage and to living obedient lives and surviving the battle that Eve, and every person on the face of the earth has faced since the garden.

Please note the personal responsibility Paul places on every believer. We are to “clothe ourselves”, in other words to “put on” our own protection. We cannot dress others in the armor nor can they ‘clothe’ us. Neither are we to pick and choose which pieces we want to wear. No, if we wish to win the battle(s), we are to put all of the armor on; and it is clear that we are to not only put each piece on but we are to know what the pieces are and how they protect us. Don’t miss the added key to all of the armor is prayer and alertness. While he doesn’t say to put these on he gives clear instruction to “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”

Paul testifies, and all of Scripture supports, that the devil schemes against the children of God; and that without being properly (ie fully) clothed with God’s “armor” we will not be able to stand. Instead, we will, like Eve, succumb to his tricks and deceitfulness. Make no mistake, as children of God, the devil is our number one enemy and we must learn to live fully armed and ready.

There is much to learn in the weeks ahead. Many, if not all of us, have already heard or studied this section of our soldier manual (the Bible), and yet good soldiers never stop training. They continually prepare for battle, they make sure their equipment is in order, and that they are well versed in using it. They know what is expected of them, they have drills, and training sessions to assure that they are ready. We must do no less and we must start with the wisdom packed into these two little verses.

(You) Look to [the Lord for your strength] (10)

(You) Put on [the full armor of God] (11)

The Spirit God Gave

Today’s Verse: 2 Timothy 1:7

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

In Paul’s day, it was Timothy that seemed to need the encouragement that God didn’t want him to live in fear of doing the work He was called to do. Instead, Paul reminded Timothy, that the Spirit God had given them, and all believers, was one that filled them with power, love, and self-discipline. In other words, Timothy had no reason to be timid for he had been empowered to live out His calling. The same is true for us today.

My first remembered experience with this verse was at VBS, not one that I attended but one I was co-leading. I was tired and stressed from some personal things going on in my life, I wasn’t feeling prepared, and definitely not strong enough to lead, love, and deal with all that goes into VBS as I had committed to do. Today’s verse “just happened to be” the theme verse for the week. God knew that just like Timothy, I needed to remember that while I might be nervous and feel too weak to lead, He had given me His Spirit – equipping me with not only the power to lead, but with love for the kids and all involved, as well as the discipline to stay committed and focused on Him, and boldly share the Gospel with the children. And, as a bonus, He daily renewed my strength and filled me with immeasurable joy when I was able to personally lead one of the children to the Lord.
