Observations and Applications
From my journal
- The first time the king saw the power of Daniel’s God, the king responded by praising him as the God of gods(2:47)… this time, the king credited him as the only God who is able to deliver/rescue them from “death to life.”
- Their boldness and pledge to the king that God would deliver them from the furnace or from the king’s hands angered the king.
- Living faithfully and speaking boldly for God will seldom be welcomed by those who serve other gods or believers who have integrated themselves into this faithless culture. The result of our faithfulness can be used to open the eyes of others to the power, might, and love of our true and living God! Me from the inside-out 🦋
The words of Psalm 48:14 also came to mind: “For this God is our God forever and ever; and He will be our guide to the very end.”

Daniel 3:28
“Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed, “Praised be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent forth his angel and has rescued his servants who trusted in him, ignoring the edict of the king and giving up their bodies rather than serve or pay homage to any god other than their God!”
INTO THE TEXT
For a king who thought he was the most powerful person, we can understand his anger at the three men who challenged his authority. Nebuchadnezzar asked for the furnace to be heated seven times hotter than usual. It was so hot that the men who took Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to the furnace died instantly. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego fell into the furnace still bound. It seemed to be a hopeless situation.
However, God is greater than any created thing. God was about to show the king who had all power and authority. Suddenly, there were four men walking around untied in the fire. King Nebuchadnezzar described the fourth man as “Like that of a god!”
Nebuchadnezzar himself went to the door of the furnace calling for the “servants of the most high God” to come out. What was meant to bring death, God used to reveal that He is the source of all life.
As they left the furnace, the people saw that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were completely unharmed. Not even their clothes were affected, and they didn’t even smell of fire! God completely protected them from every aspect of the fire.
Nebuchadnezzar praised the God who rescued Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego as well as their trust in Him for being willing to put their lives in danger rather than worship anyone else. He acknowledged that there is no other god who can deliver in this way. King Nebuchadnezzar still did not completely get it, but he was slowly understanding more of who God is. God, in His kindness, was still patiently calling him.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were able to rejoice in their sufferings, and it produced perseverance and hope. We, too, will face many trials for our faith. But as Paul writes, our sufferings do not “put us to shame” (Romans 5:5 ESV), We know that we serve the all-powerful God who is with us always, even through the fire.
PRAYER
Gracious, loving God, you are the God of hope even when things look hopeless. You prepare the path ahead, knowing what I need before I do. Help me to remember the security and hope in my salvation so that I can stand firm in trials. Amen.
